Thinking of buying this tomorrow as i'm looking for a good tactical war sim, but i'm not sure. so im wondering if anyone can answer a few questions:

Is it any good?

Does it have a very steep learning curve (like really frustrating)?

How well does it run, and any experiance's with it on a 8800gtx?

cheers

jt

actually ive just tried the demo and really didnt like it :p so i guess this threa is kinda pointless now

I got a short time ago, and I found it very enjoyable, you really need the 1.08 patch as this fixes a lot of things. I mainly play around with the editor, making stupidly large armies fight tiny ones. :p

Does any one know of an editor walkthrough for this game?

With the latest patch, this game is playable for the first time. The 1 piece of advice i would give is dont try and play with Transparancy AA enable, the FPS grinds to a halt (4xaa/16xaf all game settings to max) on my setup.
There are still some major IA flaws but its getting better with every patch.

the single player is awful and didn't run too great on my system, so I sold it

multi player is were it is at apparently

hm, maybe i'll get it when its in the bargain bins.
I would. Bit like Marmite in that you either love it or hate it. A friend and I like similar games inc. BF2 and CS:S. He loves ARMA, I think its poo.

Can't stand the dated looking gfx. I know its shallow but I like a bit of eye candy. :D

yeh even though i didnt like the gameplay i have to admit i was playing the demo on maximum video settings and it did look fantastic. Certainly not dated.

Like i said, turn off TAA and put the viewing distance to about 1000.
The viewing distance is a massive killer of FPS.

I just bought this from a fella in the MM about 3 days ago. I've been playing it for awhile and I'm starting to get into it more and more. It's not a simple point and shot FPS, as pretty much one or two hits and it's game over.

So you need to use cover, and take your time. But I'm really starting to like the realism. At first I thought that I'd get bored, but I'm not. Sometimes it can be hard as I've had to reply some levels dozen's of times just to complete it. If anyone knows the game, I found the level with destruction of the URAL convoy and also the clearing of the town when your a Special Forces dude quite hard... I had to finish that one crawling on my belly. Lol.

Performance wise, it runs on my rig @1280x1024 with 2xAA and 8xAF and in-game settings on "Normal" / "Default" bar one option on "High". I did have to turn of Supersampling in the NV CP as that really kills the performance. However, even on "Normal" settings the game looks very sharp and pretty to me but also runs quite nicely.

So to sum up, if you fancy a slightly challenging game which takes some time but is also rewarding as well, I'd say give it a go. I mean where else can you pop a tank with an RPG and then pick off the tank crew only to be buzzed by an enemy helicopter. Very cool!! :D Also, I would say that it's only slightly frustrating. ;)

Hope that helps! :)

cheers everyone. I bought call of juarez instead today :p . But from what you guys have said i may well look into armed assault in the future when its cheaper e.t.c.

To the guy asking about performance on the demo. I was getting an average of 40-50 with some dips into the low 30's with it at 1280x1024 all maximum and aa set to very high.

It reminds me of the origin Operation:Flashpoint. Ones of those games praised by almost all major reviewers, yet loads of people didn't like it. Technically, from a gameplay aspect it ticks all the boxes, but some people just don't enjoy that kind of game.

OF on the other hand was great :)

well firegod, you put some effort into playing it and seen what the game is about, wish there were more people who would do this with games like these. most people tend to jump in and then get straight back out if they dont like the first impression. its no run of the mill fps so you arent gonna instantly be good at it (unless youve played ofp) and will have to put some thought in how you approach objectives.

can see some awesome mods being released for this game to!

After adding the 1.08 patch, read the release notes, they have added a 'default' setting in the graphics settings, this is said to improve performance on cards with >512Meg gfx memory.
Back to the original post.
Instal 1.08
turn off T AA
set in all game options to max values (inc PP)
(i also disable shadows as i dont think they look any good for the performance hit)
Viewing distance to halfway
Enjoy
