Hi there,

2 days ago (sunday) I went to the gym and worked pretty hard.

For the past day or so my arms have been killing me at the elbow join and it hurts just lifting my arm under its own weight.

I am thinking i may have overexerted myself or used to big of weights.

Sunday was the first time i had done any weights, pretty much ever.

I am wondering whether i should go again and do some now (weights), or just do aerobic stuff?

Is this pain normal and should i work through it or wait till im fully rested and no aching?

Thanks.

I personally found my muscles in my arms were much stronger than the tendons, so though I could lift the weight it would really hurt on the inner elbow as you describe. If I were you I'd rest and then start using lower weights till the tendons get used to the strain.

Give it another day. Especially when you're new to training it is better to err on the side of caution.

Are you warming up properly? Are you doing stretches? These will help avoid injury.

If its a tendon connecting the muscle to bone its different from the joint itself. They both need sufficient time to heal. How long does it take to heal a cut? I did a pulling exercise with elbows wide and wrists close so it put a strain on the inner tendon between upper arm and forearm. Ive not done that particular variation of exercise for at least 2 months. Not because Ive injured myself but because ignoring that type of pain is how you do injure yourself.

You could go to the gym and work other muscles but if its to do with lifting you would be limited to the legpress (with a pin to vary the weight as opposed to picking any weights up).

I have had the same pains, you just need rest maybe a week?? I get them mainly after doing my biceps as a lot of strain is placed on the tendons around that joint.

What set/rep did you do, is it different to your usual reps/sets?

If it's your normal weight, do you think you could have executed it wrong?

If it's still hurting i'd personally give it a rest until it feels better.

Well i rested myself well and i have gone back and done less this time so we will see how it goes.

With regards to Whey protein drinks, do they have any stimulants that would keep me awake at night if i had a drink now and went to bed in an hour?

From the pain and location you're describing, you should rest it.

If it was the first time you've lifted, then there is a fair chance that you're not only using the wrong weights, but that your form is off and you're not doing everything correctly. Take someone with you that knows what they're doing and can help you get the most out of the workout and do their best to prevent you from injuring yourself.
