Maybe there's a better thread for this (@BaZ87?) but what on earth is going on at Barca?

Catalan police say they have made several arrests after searching the offices of Spanish side Barcelona.

The number of arrests made and the identity of those involved have not yet been confirmed.

The police operation was conducted on Monday after an investigation into financial issues at Barcelona.

The club's presidential elections take place on Sunday after their previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, announced his resignation in October.

ESPN's twitter feed is reporting the following people got arrested:

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, current CEO Oscar Grau and head of legal Roman Gomez Ponti have all been arrested today in relation to the Barcagate social media scandal.

Back in January when Messi's contract was leaked (up to £2.3m a week - the most in sport history) it did seem more than a little convenient at a time when he and other players were being vocal about the leadership and lack of any real ideas at the club, with Messi himself quoted as calling Bartomeu's presidency "a disaster".

Barca had this to say about the leak at the time. "FC Barcelona expresses its absolute support for Lionel Messi, especially in the face of any attempt to discredit his image, and to damage his relationship with the entity where he has worked to become the best player in the world and in football history." It's the response you'd expect from any club but it did raise a wry smile.

Amongst the many transfers over the past four seasons they spent big on Coutinho, Greizman and Dembele, who are also likely to be on big contracts, none of whom have delivered to any great degree at the club. With the Corona virus hitting them hard and now with an £800m+ debt it'll be interesting to see what the new president and board will do at the place.

Why is leaking a players contract details a bad thing?

Because it will make various people very unhappy I assume. Players that don't feel like they are getting paid as much as they should relative to Messi, people who thought he was overpaid and now have proof etc. Think about why companies don't publish a list of every staff members pay. It would cause issues.

But I thought because of financial fair play, contracts details have to be known. I mean we pretty much know how much premiership players are paid, don’t we?

We know a lot about what companies are making as well but we don't have access to their per employee information in the public domain unless they are high up enough.

We know the state of the clubs finances and roughly whats going on but its not all public domain.

Think about when City were banned for breaches of FFP. They got away with it because they basically didn't co-operate with the investigation so it couldn't be proved definitively that they had broken the rules. You might know that they wage bill for a club is £200m/year but you don't know if £199m of that is Messi and £1m is the other 25 players etc.

The point is we know pretty much all the PL players wages.
