Well, I thought I had my upgrade path all mapped out then BANG ! an explosion of cheap dual core options.

I have an Opty 144 running at 2.6GHz (see sig) and all I ever do is Game,...DOD:S, GW FEAR, and many more.

This rig is serving me well, but I am thinking now of the upgrade to this puppy as the price seems soooo good (GIbbo you git ;) )
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Socket_939_X2.html
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4600BVBOX) (CP-128-AM) PRICE = £179

I was going to upgrade my Ram to 2Gb OCZ 3200 stuff with nice tight timings just for a bit of comfort which is almost the same price as the CPU  .

Do I

1.) get the new CPU ?

2.) Will I see much of a difference (single core still best option for gaming ?) 2.4GHz Dual core V 2.6GHz single core.

Or

3.) should I buy the RAM and save the entire upgrade process for post 24th July ;) .

Crap, I am all ends up confused !
Opinions and advice most appriciated as always.

The fact that AMD have dropped the axe on Socket 939 makes it a wise choice to go dual-core if you don't plan to upgrade again soon. & i'm sure gaming issues with dual-core will be resolved.

i know, tell me about it, so tempted by X2 and even 3.4Ghz presler for like 130 pounds, its shocking

Oh dear! Hadn't looked at the price properly before! That X2 3800+ is looking very t.e..m...p....t.....i....n.....g........ must resist & set my eyes (wallet) on E6400 Intel Core 2 Duo :(

The 3800 should at least match the clockspeed on your single core (2.6) and tbh I would be surprised if it didn't exceed that.

Depends on the stepping ??

If I managed to get a x2 3800 to 2.6 GHz that would be amazing given the price !!
Can anyone confirm this ?

Just noticed the level of cache on the X2 3800,..only 512,..my Opty has 1Mb,..any hit in performance with the lower amount ?

I have an FX55 Clawhammer and have ordered an X2 4600+. Price was just too good to resist. Yes i'm weak, but considering the 4800+ is over twice the price and 939 production is winding down, if not stopped already, then better to buy now and have it for later.
My thinking is, i'll benchmark the FX55 in games and apps I use, then pop in the X2 bench it, plus check it works, then continue to use the more powerfull for games. Flight sims, FPS and FM2006 with lots of leagues.
The numbers may not be just as high for the X2 as the FX55, cache and clock speed, but they are close, and the differance is made up for by the second core. Thats my logic.
Chances are i'll give AM2 a miss unless it's around for a long time.

See here

Obviously not ALL 3800's will do this and a lot depends on what hardware you are going to run with it.

I built a 3800 X2 + DFI NF4 SLI-DR Expert + OCZ 2Gb (2 x 1GB) DDR500.

I just upped the FSB straight to 250 which gave 2.5ghz CPU and 500mhz memory.

Not sure what stepping it is.

That was about a month ago, can't say wether you'd get it so easy but I suspect so :)
