Or CSS, or TF2 for that matter ...., it tries to start via Steam, but then says has encountered a problem please tell Microsoft blah blah ...

Is this a DX9 problem folks? Should I reinstall DX9? I've got the thing from Microsoft but it says I already have an equivelant or newer example ...

Tried verifying your game cache?

Could be an issue with the some of the source files being corrupt.

My HDD is knackered and I have to do this every now and again.

If Steam is crashing when you load up a game, then it's probably going to be an issue with Steam and not the game's caches since it's affecting more than one game. Have you got any non-Valve games that you can try as I think a lot of the Valve games use the same shared files. If it's only a problem with the Valve games then yeah it could also be the shared files that they all use - if so, maybe just delete the local content and redownload the game?

Try shutting steam, and then going to the steam folder and manually deleting all the source related GCF files, this means they should all be redownloaded and may fix the issue, it sounds like if not the game files, then the shared engine files are corrupt.

I dont think its the game files either. I just deleted DoDs, as its only small, then re-downloaded it, and its still the same problem.

But HL2, and the episodes, they all still work ...

I tried removing the base GFC file for source, but it didnt make any difference, and it didnt download another one either.

Right I copped the 'ump and deleted ALL of Steam. All 85 gig of it.

Now I just got to download the bits I want. I may well not bother with MW2 or L4D2 for a bit ....

Yes, but not ALL Steam games. For example HL2 still worked.

Note I said "worked".

I got the 'ump and did a rage-windows-format, and now everything is working fine :)

Have you not?

As you know it takes a while to get it all sorted out, and half way through you realise it just wernt that important anyway :) It's good for the soul!

Reinstalling windows is definitely the way to go most of the time if a problem isn't instantly solvable.

Reinstalling takes about 30 mins (60 with installing/configuring programs) and you can do other stuff at the same time. Problem-solving can take way longer and you have to concentrate :)
