ARRGHHH changed CPU now no boot, HELP!

Just changed my CPU over for a new one I bought off of MM, textbook install (I thought) and reboot my rig... and nothing. I'm stumped.

Specs:

*DS3
*E6600
*2GB Gskill HZ
*Corsair HX620

What happens is that all of the fans except for the GPU fan start spinning, and then just as you would normally expect the boot "beep" the GPU fan kicks in on full and the system just stays like that... no more no less.

Tried RAM individually, took out USB card, re-seated GPU, made sure all PSU connectors are in, unplugged power cord + reset BIOS... still does exactly the same.

I presumed if it was the CPU that was faulty then i'd get beeps wouldn't I... and surely the GPU fan wouldn't exhibit this strange problem?

Anyone else come accross this?

Help...

Well, I changed the CPU back to the old one and I have the exact same problem... i'm guessing the mobo is foobarred. Will buy another board and RMA to Gigabyte I think. I don't reckon i'll replace it with another DS3 though... i'm thinking EVGA or similar if only simply for the good warranty and quick turnaround...

when my GPU fan started at full speed and i got no post it was because my memory wasnt seated right, try taking out your memory and reseating it

Rebuild out of the box - it is possible you are shorting on the case - i presume you removed the mobo to install the new chip and HSF? Whislt it may not of before, it might be now.

I took out the motherboard tray (slides out of the case) and installed that way... I can't see it shorting to be honest.

Just unplugged everything again, removed BIOS battery/cleared CMOS, reseated both sticks individually in every slot, tried a different video card... it's just doing the exact same thing each and every time.

Will have another go tommorrow but if no joy then am just going to bite the bullet and get another board... and RMA the Gigabyte to sell when it gets back. :(

hmm, i have a similar problem, i bought an AMD skt 939 4400+ of the MM and (once i had bought a new PSU) i put it in, no post, all fans stay spinning on full, now i know i'm doing everything right, as i didnt remove the mobo, just literally swapped out CPU/heatsink (which both fit in without needing to change backplate etc). tried re-seating RAM, i have more than enough power (530w)
i just dont know whats up with it (and yes i checked, my mobo does support it)
i tried emailing the guy i bought it off, asking for even a part refund, and return of the porcessor (at my expanse) but he has ignored me, so i guess i'll just have to chalk it up to experience, i doubt i'll be buying anything crucial off the MM anymore though, totally lost faith in it. :( :(

oh, and btw, my old CPU (amd 3500+) still works fine in the mobo, no problems.

Damn that sucks... difference is neither of my CPU's work in the mobo now, guess that's a good thing really as much rather the mobo be screwed than the CPU.

But mate, send the CPU back to the seller asap, it seems it's a dud.

as i said, i tried, he ignored my email.

Try again and also contact a Don. Did you get his address/telephone number? Who was the seller, try posting in the thread if it isnt closed?

i did, however i cleared out my inbox shortly after i got the processor, the guy had a tonne of good feedback, so i just gave it the benefit of the doubt, it was about 2 months after that i was finally able to try it (was strapped for cash and i knew my old 350W wouldn't cut the mustard)

edit: this was about 1 week ago that i finally tried it.
edit2: i'm going to give this guy one more email, and if he doesn't respond then i guess all i can do is leave some negative feedback.

Well he's definitely been online, report him to a Don if he doesn't reply.

ive sent a second email, asking for him to contact me to negotiate a repayment, and told him if he doesn't respond within a week i would leave bad feedback, and report him to a don.

thanks for making me keep going, was just about to give up on it

If its the CPU you bought in Feb which you got your first trust point for then you've had it months.

If you came back to me 2 months later im afraid id ignore you as well as anything couldve happened to it in that time.

And if youre sure it was DOA why are you only asking for a partial refund?

Do you get a constant on-off-on-off situation?

Having same issues with a DS4, and i think ive narrowed it down to my RAM as it dosent happen with it at stock

yup, thanks, good input, i've clearly explained it, i was un able to use it, as my power supply was way to weak, it was already at it's limit, hence me not having used it, until 2 weeks ago when i bought a new PSU. that was the first time i removed it from the box. but i suppose because i was unable to use it you think he should get away with it? for all i know it could have been damaged in the post, it also arrived with what looked like CPU paste all over the pins, which he told me was to prevent condensation in a water colling setup...is this true? i wouldn't know. not having done water cooling in my time, nor having any understanding of it

If its got paste all over the pins id be inclined to think it had been used under phase. Which could mean its been clocked to within an inch of its life.

If theres paste on the pins it may have hardened stopping the pins making good electrical contact causing the no boot

I wasnt having a go, i was just saying what my initial thoughts would be if I was the seller.

Did he mention the paste on the pins in the advert?

no, he later told me that after i had sent the cheque, i thought nothing of it, as it wasn't very clearly explained, and i thought what had been done was this:

the black stuff over the chip things, which, according to the IHS removal guide is ok, hence me thinking nothing of it.

actually,y it was also third hand, apparently its 1st owner ad removed the IHS (which was included) and its second owner, the one i bought it off, had used it by placing the IHS back on the core. this is what he told me to do. didnt work...or i wouldn't be here :(

If you paid by cheque you can still have it stopped and claim your cash back that way.

Send him an email and a recorded delivery letter telling him you want a refund because it dosent work and he didnt mention the paste on the pins. give him 7 days to reply then cancel the cheque. Once you have the money back in your account, send the cpu back recorded delivery.

I think the heatspreader is removed for watercooling.

If he didnt mention the heatspeader was off in the advert you have every right to a refund.

Contact minstadave, hes a cracking guy and is very helpful

the cheque was sent two months ago, it would have long cleared by now wouldn't it?

(sorry, bit of a noob at life, still dont know how everything works :p)

Yes, it usually takes about 3 days for a cheque to clear. Prity sure you won't be able to get the money back now as the funds have been transferred.
