ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I can complete the game on level 1 - amateur and level 2

But otherwise I am crap...

Why??

My passing is crap, my shooting is weak and my defence is all over the place..

I have the PC version and play with a PS2 joypad...

In regular mode - I always hold down the sprint button if attacking or defending, when I defend with a lot of pressure my players run everywhere but to get the ball and when I defend in a normal manner without added pressure they just chase the player from the other team with the ball without putting any challenges in...

When I shoot on the regular level its always weak, my headers / volleys dont come off...

Can some PES8 guru please give me some pointers I really want to master this game..

I find a lot of my goals in REGULAR mode come from through balls when I am lucky enough not to be offside, as soon as I get / have the ball the other team regain possession so easily..

Please guide me

Thanks

Time passes/through balls properly - use the radar to check your players aren't offside
Dribble round players sprinting towards you (if they're coming from above, take off sprint for a moment then run upwards)
Unless if you are close, don't shoot unless you are running towards their goal. Also, if their defender is trying to tackle your player and is very close, the shot will usually be bad if shooting with much power.
When defending, just hold x and square sometimes and sprint when you are a long way away. If possible, don't use a defender who is marking an open player to intercept the ball. When you are new, a sweeper can be incredibly useful too.
If there is a long threw ball which will leave your defenders useless, hold triangle to get your GK to clear it.
Slide tackles are dbomb but if possible, don't use them in the penalty area (except to block passes)
Pick a team with good body balance - it means your players are harder to tackle.

And of course, the obvious, practise ;)

Also when defending don't pick players no where near the attacker as you will just pull your own defense apart.

I tend to shooting whilst holding R2.

I tend to double tap O to cross the ball rather than a single tap making it a lower/near post cross.

I find a lot of my goals come from a counter attack or crosses. But if i am trying to break down a defense i will use short passes a lot.

Lofted through balls rarely work against the computer.

Dont bother with Tricks or fancy turns.

This may be part of your problem, the PS2 pad adaptors I have used have always had a tiny amount of lag, which is enough to make games that require split-second button pressing and movement difficult (for other examples try using the pad with Street Fighter games)...I used to use a PS2 pad and adaptor when playing PES3 and it was far from ideal.

This makes you place the shot, it's useful if you're close to the goal or you're facing a funny angle because it'll be more accurate/curl more but if you're quite far away it's probably not ideal.

useful! but do mix it up a LITTLE, about 75% of the time i'll double tap. when you get good you'll be looking on your radar at where your attackers are so you begin to learn whether you need to put the extra height on the ball for your attackers to get there on time.

It does depend on the team you are and the team you're playing against. sometimes just knocking the ball around and waiting for a gap and through passing works. But it's definately true you'll get most of your goals from "opportunist" play.

I do it all the time myself, but you generally would need to play with wide, fast wingers to take full advantage of this - or just knowing when the right time is to ping one over the top for a striker to run on to. This is generally from a 1-2 pass and you HAVING to knock one over the top as the defender would get it otherwise.

i pretty much ONLY use sidestep and fake shot, they're the most effective.

At the end of the day nothing beats practice and it'll take you a fair few hours before you are a good player, let alone a VERY good one :)

Hope this helps

just wanted to let you know that I played for an hour this evening and played according to ordinaryjoe's instructions and wow for the first time I played controlled , attacking footy and defended really well as well..

In regular mode I got to the final and lost on penalites to brazil but WOWWOWOWOW what a turn around...

I need to brush up on my volleys and headers and practice more on strategies and gameplay but am really chuffed with my progress so quickly thanks to you ordinary joe..

I will next try and incorporate / build on what I know now based on what others have taken time to post...

Thanks you indeed..

they are the only tricks i use but only to get past the keeper when 1-on-1. I find that tricks work on multiplayer but the computer i have yet to fool using a step over or roulette.

But basically it just like other people have said practice for a while it gets easier.
