Spec of machine

Mobo - Asus A8n SLI
CPU - Athlon 64 3000+
Memory - DDR 2 512mb
GFX - Nvidia 6800 GT
Hard Drive - Maxtor 250GB SATA
DVD-RW - Pioneer IDE

Issue - PC would make a clicking noise (Not HD clicking noise ) and just locks up completley even Ctrl ALT Del does not work it also locks up when burnings CD's / DVD's and downloading anything from Internet Explorer. I checked the system logs in computer managment and found numerous ATAPI and CD ROM red error's here is one of them "The device, \Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period"

What i have tried - I put a new SATA Hard drive in and installed windows onto it, Tried a new IDE Cable for the DVD-RW drive, Bought a SATA DVD-RW as i thought the IDE controllers might be broke or the DVD-RW drive faulty, Installed Windows XP 5 different times, Downloaded all latest chipset / GFX / Sound drivers

None of this has worked still comes up with the CD Rom and ATAPI errors in system logs and freezes constantly.

Any one got any idea what this could be?

Sounds like the southbridge chipset may be failing. It controls IDE/ SATA/ USB etc.

The only other thing I can think of that clicks is the keyboard when you hold a key down for ages. Try booting without the keyboard or with a different keyboard.

Hi thanks for the quick reply Tried a USB and PS2 keyboard still same my initial thought was that the mobo was faulty as well but as i aint got a spare socket 939 mobo i cant really test it

Memory - Installs XP fine doesnt blue screen or throw up error's also tested with Gold mem

Hard Drive - Tried 2 different SATA hard drives

CPU - Not tested

Psu - not tested

GFX - have a Display and no issues

DVD RW - Tried both SATA and IDE and also new IDE cable

getting a lot of event 51 errors now in the sytem logs -An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

ok my options are

(A) Buy new motherboard

(B) Take it to a computer shop so they can take a look ( I probaly know more than them)

dont really wanna pay £50 for a new mobo if it is not 100% certain that the mobo is causing the problem
