Artic Freezer 64 Installation?

Hi

I cannot for the life of me install this heatsink & fan. Im having to use excessive force to get it anywhere near clipping on; if i push any harder its going to go straight through the motherboard.

Im trying to install it on a Skt939 MSI K8N Neo4 motherboard with a AMD X2 4200; could it be incompatible with my setup?

This is the 2nd Artic Freezer ive had, as the first one snapped when I tried to lock the clip and ive not had any luck with this one.

I had similar probs.

Is the mobo installed in your case ?

If yes , then i had to remove the PSU to fit it.

Hook it onto the lower part of the heatsink retention bracket first and with the PSU removed its a lot easier to locate the top part.

Good Luck

Before you clip the pins into the mobo, try practising clipping if you know what I mean?

Like, twist the clips with one hand and then push to see how it clips so you have an idea of when you actually clip it into the motherboard.

This is what I did and it's easy.

Same here whe i used to have one. Had to remove the PSU as well, a mega pain.

i have it on a removable motherboard tray; so theres no PSU or anything in the way.

Everything ive read about this HSF says its easy to install, though im convinced it doesnt work with my mobo/cpu as im having to use too much force; even if i did clip it on when I go to lock it and I think it would end up snapping.

Im using the rentention module I got with the motherboard, which is exactly the same as this

Also when trying to install and ive hooked on the side without the lock handle and try to hook on the other side, the heatsink isnt sitting right on the CPU, its not level and there is a slight incline.

Will try n give it another go tonight.

Leave the paste off and fit the cooler whilst you have the tray out a couple of times. I did this a few times and there is a way where it just fits and clicks in nicely. It seems to be where you have the lever that causes ease of fitting and hard fitting. 2-3 praccy runs and you will work it out, like i say leave the paste off until you work it out giving you plenty of attempts without the gunk being spread everywhere. You can feel through the lever whether it is on correctly as is resists you but you can feel the roll of the mechanism going smooth when it is right, rather than a i am going to break it feel.
Hope that makes sense.

I have exactly the same motherboard and heatsink and they fit fine. First thing to do is remove the fan assembly from the heatsink which will make it a little easier to handle. Other than that I just followed the instructions and it went on no probs.

cheers

Same retention bracket as mine.

If its a removable tray you laughing, and do as Malc30 says and have a few practice runs.

Lay the mobo flat , hook the non lever side ( facing the bottom of the mobo ) on first then place the Freezer over the CPU and a bit of pressure so that its flat to the CPU ( not at an incline ) . Then just move the levering mech. around and it will eventually line up.

Excessive force is not needed just a little practice and patience , the last thing you want is a damaged mobo or chip !!

Fiddly but it will fit :D

agreed. I tried to install it without removing everything and ended up breaking the CPU :( (basically got arsey with it and forced it on)
then refitted it on the new CPU with the mobo out, taking a lot more care and practising what needed to be done first and then it worked fine.

Heh tbh the Scythe Mine fitted to mine that used standard mounting points was bit scarey to clip and lock, had to use a lot of force. However the locking arms were short stubby things so when you think about it; boils down to simple logic - a longer lock arm requires less force as its futher from point on tension. ;) Iirc the ACF pro 64 ones are quite long so id have been **** scared to use a lot of force incase of cpu crushing... :(

Yeah, i just re-seated mine and it was a rite pain...Dont force it on, it almost falls into place...It's to do with the lever part, cause it can move in and out kinda.

Best thing is to put the rear part on first almost, then push the other clip down from the side, but again dont put too much pressure on the thing cause it just wont go anywhere. Think i ended up using the lever itself to move the mechanism around :P

Just did mine again this afternoon, not easy tbh, but more of a fiddle than anything else, if your short on space do it with the mobo out of the case, I find it easiest to hang the side furthest away from the leaver onto the bracket first and then slip the other side over. took me a couple of attempts but it goes on in the end, just don't force it, when you get it right you will know.

well ive just gave it another go and its having none of it, i tried installing it with the fan removed from the heatsink and it still wouldnt go on. The only time I got it to clip and lock was when there was no processor on the motherboard, which is obviously useless to me, lol.

Ive lost patience with the thing so its gonna go back; but now I gotta consider what to get instead.

Im looking for something which is quiet and decent at cooling a AMD X2 4200, im not planning on overclocking, and will fit in my Lian Li PC 60 case.

How are the Scythe Mine/Infinity HSF?

I think you haven't got the back clips in properly before you push the lever. No way should you be struggling like this as i could do mine with the standard pad on and it's even easier with that off and paste smeared on it.
Also make sure you have the lever in the right position to give the most slack, it's well worth the hassle as it's a great cooler.

I hate to be negative , but you are at fault :D

It will fit , it does fit, less pressure when applying and more accuracy.

Tricky , yes ! . But a bad workman always blames his tools !!

I'm sorry if this appears harsh , but basically it fits !

If you want a challenge , then try fitting an old AMD64 stock HSF , this needed a flat head screw driver and non slip gloves.

Cheers,

Mark

Please be patient. Let's try again.

Remove fan assembly from heatsink.
Put grain of rice of grease on CPU.
Orientate heatsink so that lever is at the top so that air blow out the back of the case.
Put lever on the right side of the top bracket.
Place heatsink straight down on CPU and give it a little twist to spread grease.
Locate the holes of the bottom bracket on to the retention clips.
Locate the holes of the top bracket (the loose one).
Move lever from right side to left side to tighten mechanism.
Put fan assembly back on and plug in fan.
Done

Please be patient. Like I said I have the same heatsink, an X2 CPU and motherboard. The first time I ever fitted a specialist heatsink was with this setup.

cheers

ok, i'll give it one more go!

This time if im not successful, i'll take some pictures to show whats going off n maybe you can spot where im going wrong.

Just make sure the back clips are properly located on the lugs Before you press the lever. Do it without any paste on a few times and you will get the technique. Once got apply paste and fit. JD.

Luckily the 64 comes with a thermal pad not paste so can try and try again without needing to reapply paste again and again !

well ive had no luck yet again, here are some pictures I took to show what is happening.

I did a quick google search and found a few comments on newegg.com website about this cooler and a few people have had a similar problem where its incredible tight fitting and the clip has snapped or it just wont go on.

Maybe its my AMD retention module or something, but its having none of it.
