Am running Prime95 (same torture test) on two systems, X2 4400 @ 2.3ghz (mild overclock done through Bios) and Opteron 146 @ stock speed (2 ghz). X2 has a Gigabyte G Power pro cooler on @2000rpm, running same speed as Freezer pro on Opteron more or less (2136 on Freezer Pro).
The opteron jumped from 28 idle to 41 deg load, peaked at 43 and down to 42 deg whilst running prime, no case cover on and nothing else running.
X2 4400 rose steadily from 27 idle to 36 deg load and settled back down to 34 deg c, surfing net, playing a game and typing this whilst running prime.
================
I was expecting better out of the Freezer Pro - the Stock AMD cooler went from 34 idle to 41 immediately, suggesting it's no better than the stock cooler save at idle temps? Every review rates it, as do many of the people on here so I bought one.
I already knew the G Power was good, but on this showing it looks like I've wasted my cash on the Freezer Pro - though it was cheap enough to buy I suppose.
Opteron has 2gb 500ddr OCZ ram (on offer at OCuk), no pci cards in, 1 hdd, 1 optical drive and onboard graphics at the moment, no case cover on. M/board is Foxconn Winfast 6150K8ma - cheap n cheerful, case is standard midi tower. Temps are cool in my room (no radiators on). M/board is @31 deg c
X2 4400 has 2gb Geil value, 3 pci cards in, 7800gtx, 4 hdd, 3 optical drives and loads of fans (it's a stacker). Motherboard is @ 28 deg c. Asus A8n Premium m/board.
I will swap the fans round when I've recovered from my hangover tommorrow, but inital findings are that Gigabyte G Power Pro cooler is worth the extra outlay over the Freezer 64.
Are there any issues I am unaware of? Does the Opteron naturally run faster than an X2 processor? Anything else I haven't taken into account?
If anyone's interested I will post the findings of the fan swap tommorrow.
My thoughts are right now to buy another G Power before I start overclocking the Opteron, or jump to water cooling. I can't see any point in getting a Scythe Ninja as I don't think it will be any better (maybe a bit worse?) than the G Power.
So for anyone wondering what HSF to get for their AMD Processor, hope I've helped in some way with your choice.
