Is Artic silver 5 good as a replacment thermal paste for a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, as i have just changed my cpu and lost a bit of the compound and now when runnig prime my processor is hitting 55oc ( ambient 30oc) this is not good.

Yeah will do, i just heard somw bad things re this cpu cooler and thermal combination, also is 55oc full load to hot for a opteron 146?

Thats quite warm to be honest, but the weather is hot right now so your cpu wont be super cold :)

Did you use a rice sized grain of thermal compound ?

Because too much can be worse than not enough :)

My room is currently 30oc the cpu is hitting 56oc max, the thermal compound i used was the stuff that was left on the bottom of my cooler after removing the old cpu. :)

That temp should be ok tbh, just wind down the overclock if it gets towards 60,

I would order some Arctic Siliver 5 and reseat the cooler with this eventually :)

Yeah may try some tomorrow, but i have a nagging feeling that somwhere on this forum somoene mentioned that the Artic freezer and Artic Silver 5 are not good together.

Ive used them together before now, and i didn't have any problems :)

Did you get good temps?

Also what household item can i use to clean my processor and heatsink before applying fresh compound?

That would explain that temperature then. Clean all the thermal paste off ussing something like Isopropynol, and reapply a raice grain sized blob onto the cpu.

Yeah going to get some tomorrow and give this overclock another go. :)

It will take a few load and cooling cycles to cure the AS5 and it will take it longer if there isn't additional cooling in your case so be patient :)

If your room temp is still around that 30°C mark that will defo increase your temps considerably :(

My case has 4x 80mm fans all on and the side of the case is off.

The room is still around 30oc but the cpu is not going above 57 even after 40mins prime so i think it should get better soon when the compound cures.

To help your fans to create airflow through your case don't take the side of your case, it generally disrupts the airflow :(

Ah i thought taking the side of would let more cooler air in and help keep it cool.

What CPU do you have? If its an AMD, then you are possibly getting poor contact with the HSF or poor contact with the IHS.

I have an opty 146, if the temps dont improve i will check the contacts.

Temps will improve a bit when the AS settles in, but only by a few degrees, not 15-20 degrees or so that you are over by.

I thought 50-53oc would be ok for full prime load after an hour?

***Update***

I am trying again i have lowered the cpu voltage the room temp is still around 30oc, still reaching temps of 55oc, this is really ******* me off.

What motherboard are you using? Motherboards aren't the most accurate things in the world when it comes to temps. Perhaps your board is known to exaggerate the CPU temps.

I have a DFI lanparty nF4 Ultra-D mobo if i could get around 54-5oc max in these temps i would be happy however they are going to 58oc.

Even at idle it is running at 40oc, my old venice even in this heat with more volts the idle temp was much better.

I think i will leave it running whilst I go out, the artic silver has only been on for 1 hour computer use maybe leaving it on for a bit before priming may help?

As for the AS5, I think it takes about 200 hours before it is fully burned in, so to speak. I believe it requires x-number of heating and cooling cycles. All this info can be found on Arctic Silver's website so I suggest you start reading.

Yeah i am runnig Sandra burn in now this should make the cpu temps go up and down so should be ok, tbh though even after 200 hours i cant see the temp dropping 5 oc. :(

Also need to find a temp probe me thinks although thiscould be costly. :(

Temp probes aren't very expensive. :)

Well I forgot that I have some temp sensors on my fan control unit I will use one of them. :)

Hope this works ok.
