Article on book about the cell

Interesting read, i had no idea that the 360 chip was a 'cousin' of the cell. IBM were cheeky buggers for doing business in that manner, but then, if it makes you more money and you aren't breaking a contract what's stopping them?

I wonder if Sony will ever work with IBM again, if they did i bet their contract will be far more strict.

I was very suprised reading it that their cpu was basically an offshoot of the cell cpu, im sure sony execs hit the roof when they got to hear of this. For the longest time i just thought it was a regular ppc triplecore cpu.

Yeah i bet a couple of em haven't landed yet. I did also wonder how the R&D of the 360 was much, much cheaper and much quicker than that of the PS3. Ok the cpu and gpu in the 360 aren't quite as 'complex' as the cell, but the CPU was still a unique product that would have required extensive research. Now i know, the research was already conducted and paid for by another company :D

I bet this was one of the main reasons why Ken was sacked from Sony, how he could enter into such an ambitious and ultimately costly project with another company and not create a contract to prevent this from happening is utter idiocy. Especially for such a senior member of a very seasoned technology company.

I still remember kuturagi saying he was delighted to "graduate" from sony. So a foot in yer ass with a pink slip in your hand = graduation?

Has been posted earlier, im sure i read it on here a few days back. Not that surprising that both the Cell and 360 CPU are related are they not based on the same core type. Its pretty common in industry for rivals to be using the same design company/manufacturer without them knowing it, its happened a few times at places i work at. Another sensational article by the WSJ, there getting pretty good at making moutains outta mole hills.:)

lol, whatever happened to the company he went to head up? The one which was supposed to lead the way in designing games for the cell processor! Was it called Cellulous or something?
