Articles/ papers / dissertations about defining music genres?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any links at all to articles etc about music genres and how different people class the same piece of music as different genres etc.

I've googled but only found articles and dissertations about how a computer could be used recognise tracks and their genre etc :confused:

thanks for any help in finding articles discussing classifying music into genres.

A good starting point would be the band My Chemical Romance since so many people think of them in different genres.

Heres some classification type of pages to look at which might help as a start:

Prog Rock sites are a good place to start as they are prob the most nasal about genres etc - though i suppose dance/electronic music genres are in greater number and change quicker than any other.

Have a look at >this< publication. Looks interesting.

use google scholar - especially good if at uni or you have access to the journals etc - typing in music genres came up with some decent sociological perspectives on page 2 eg. genre defined by class etc.
