Artifacts and crashes on Asus 4870 and Windows 7 x64

Last week my lovely new memory arrived along with a couple of new disks and a new Asus 4870 1GB Dark Knight

I have taken the opportunity to Raid 0 my two existing 250Gb drives and put on a fresh install of Windows 7 x64. Everything is stock with no OCs.

However, I am experiencing problems with artifacts sometimes appearing on the screen in Windows. They seem to appear when I return to the machine, it wakes up locked and prompts for my password. I get a couple of black lines on the screen. I have also had Windows Report that graphics driver has stopped working and restart and also a BSOD on one occasion. I am running with the latest drivers from ATI.

Any ideas on the cause? Is it likely to be a hardware fault on the 4870?

Just a suggestion, but if you haven't already, try increasing the fan speed (available in the CCC in the "overdrive" section) to about 50%-60% and see if the pc locks/crashes. If not then the prob would appear to be heat related. if that doesn't work, try some earlier drivers. If that still doesn't work then i think yuo'll be looking an rma for the card.

The fan speed was already at 50%. I ran Furmark for a while and the temp got up to a max of 80oC. I did a memory test using memtest86 which hung. Removing the two new memory sticks and the memory test completed ok. Removed the old ones and just put the news ones in..... and bang.....memtest86 crashes shortly after starting.

Running with just my old memory in last night for a while with no problems so hopefully it just faulty memory.
