My Elite for the past month or so seems to be displaying tiny white square artifacts which appear to 'fly' across the screen in two different positions (same every time it happens). They seem to start after the 360 has warmed up slightly as I don't notice them if I start up a game straight after turning the machine on.

As it is within a year from the purple guys am I entitled to return the unit for a new replacement without going to Microsoft? It is about 5 months old and I still have the receipt.

The only problem is I have installed many many games on the 120 gig drive now and have plenty of saves. My friend in a music shop took his Premium back within a year and they allowed him to keep his original hard drive. Is it likely they would want the drive back also if I demanded a replacement?

Chances are Dave, yes you can take it back to the shop. I'm not to osure of the legalaities of it, but chances are they won't kick up a fuss. If you do have to send it to MS though, it's not to much hassle.

Artifacts usually mean a faulty GPU, which is am otherboard swap on your xbox.

With regards to the HDD, again you should be able to keep it and ask for it to be replaced. If not, do any of your friends have a memory card? That way the saves are backed up, as to be fair the games which are installed can just be reinstalled / redownlaoed (the Live Arcade games are attached to your account and not your xbox).

Take it back to the purple shirts without the hard drive, tell them you want a replacement. If they open it up to check the contents, tell them you removed the hard drive as it has saved games/music etc on it and they can just remove the HDD from the replacement.

Thanks for the advice. Actually printed out from their website that it says you can return for a like for like replacement on hardware within 12 months so i'll take that with me. Can't see that they have a leg to stand on then if they argue :)

you'll be fine mate. most places are very helpful and understanding when it comes to returning 360's.

i can think of one store that's a pain but they have to remain nameless.
