Artifacts on 7990 Ares II

Given that you've tested the RAM, CPU, PSU and GPU then it would seem that a dodgy PCI-e lane on the Motherboard could be the culprit here. Try swapping to another lane, if the problem still persists then a general motherboard fault seems likely here.

EDIT - Oh, sorry, didn't realise there are 2 pages of posts.

I had some problems with my computer, couldn't find what's at fault. Then I went to chrome://flags in google chrome and disallowed "GPU compositing on all pages" and "Threaded compositing". About the same time my computer fixed itself after months of problems.

Still got this problem? I won an Ares II thanks to overclockers but unfortunately had nothing but problems with it. Always having to tweak it to get it running smoothly. It is the card at fault and I mean every Ares II pretty much.

Check this thread: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?30199-Asus-ares-2 have been involved with this long process with Asus on there for some time. Have been in touch on Facebook which led Asus to confirm it is in fact the card needing an update on the IC which requires an RMA, it can't be done by the consumer.

Having spoken with the technical department we do have a cure for this in the form of a firmware update. Only downside of this is that it is an internal controller IC firmware update along with updating the Catalyst driver which the technical department advised should be undertaken by a service centre hence needing an RMA. If you need any help in regards to arranging these repairs let us know by dropping us a private message at ASUS's Facebook page. - Bradley@ASUS

You can fix it temporarily by overclocking the 2D clocks, I just crank them all up, apply, sync cards and save profile.

I tried 2 different cards, both gave me issues so in the end I returned them both for a refund as the card is far too expensive to be anything other than perfect :(

Eh? Those cards are the same as the Devil 13 or the vtx onea arw they not? Those worked fine so why does this one not

No they are not the same, what I could find in my research is that the ARES used the GHz quality chip and the Devil used the normal quality chip.
Also they use different quality component on the card especially the condensators and power regulators.

If you ask me they pushed the ARES to far when it comes to memory overclock considering the cooling solution. With that I mean that they only cool the GPU with H20 and not the memory.

They should have went with a full cover waterblock that also cooled the ram on both sides. That was the major reason I did not buy one myself back then.

With every GPU I have had in my main rig I always buy the full cover waterblock. The problem with today's cards is that they also have memory on the back side, that does not get cooled the same way. And these might develop problems when one overclocks all the ram.
Ideally this ram should also be cooled. I know the counter argument is that the new DDR does not need active cooling as it can take higher operating temps, but that is at the rated operating freq. If one starts to push it, especially with higher volts the heat needs to be taken away fast to keep it stable (not talking about high sustain temps).

But in the end this is just my opinion
