Hey guys, planning on doing some tidying up in the garden and looking into buying some artificial grass. The area being covered is already covered in grass which isn't growing and is patchy but the ground is flat, could I just spray weed killer down to kill of the remaining grass then lay thick weed control fabric down on top of it then lay the artificial grass on top of that? Like I say the ground is relatively flat with a couple of divit patches that I was going o fill and level out with sand but not sure which type to buy? Any info would be much appreciated. I was also going to dig in some 2x2 timber around the border to pin the grass edges down onto but what would be better nails or screws to keep it in place? The grass I was looking at was 30mm pile height so would this hide any ground imperfections? Cheers

No, you'd need to strip the existing turf off first.

IIRC then you need 40mm of sharp sand leveled, membrane then the fake turf.

Anything else is half a job and will look pants.

Think the correct prep is a 100-150mm sub base of Type 1 MOT or similar. Then weed control fabric, then 40-50mm sharp sand then your artificial grass on top.

Pretty sure that is what they did for my garden!

Check with who ever is supplying the grass they all have different requirements and recommendations. I would expect you to need to dig down and lay a good base before the grass went on top. Some don't need weed control mat as they have it built in.

Do you normally use your grass to park your car on...

Way overkill sorry :p

I've just done mine; https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18735639

Any questions just fire away

That's impressive, good job! how long did it take you to complete the job? When you say your filled area for the space where the grass went was it a shallow layer of type 1 then topped up with sand or more type 1, was it 50/50? how did you compact it so well, did you hire a machine or good old back end of a shovel lol

Cheers

I was a little worried that the 50mm sub-base would be too shallow, but with all the rain with had since, it's drained instantly, and drys out very quickly

It's made the muddy mess very usable again now.

I'm not sure how the hire companies work, I assume they would drop off and pick up for an additional fee. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow one from a friend.

I hired a compactor / wacker when I did my patio. Cost about £40 iirc and they dropped off and picked up. You want it all ready to compact before you hire as they drop off am and pick up pm, unless you hire for extra days. Won't take long once your good to go. Have a can of petrol handy too, just in case you run out!
