I'm in the market for a new system. I'm not so much of a gamer any more - these days the most intensive things I do are digital painting (at very high resolutions) and 3D modeling. As an artist my main priorities, besides high performance in those categories, are stability and reliability at a budget.

With that in mind, based on a few recommendations, I've put together a shopping basket. Comments would be gratefully received.

I plan to re-use my old case.

Looks fine for what your planning on doing, only things I would change would be the PSU for a Corsair VX 450W as you dont need 600W on that build and the Corsair is a bit better made than an OCZ. Then change the HDD for a Seagate 500GB 7200.12. This has a larger platter size than the drive you have so performance will be better for you. HDDs tend to be your limiting factor on general performance so getting something slightly faster will be a good plan. Those changes shouldnt affect your budget much and should give you some improvement.

Hope that helps.

With 3D modelling, would a quadcore processor not offer much better performance? Do the programmes which you use utilise more than one core? I imagine that they would, and so a quad core would be a better option than a dual core.

ok stop there!!! i do a lot of 3d work for my job, i use maya 2009 mostly or 3d smax 2010,and final finshing touches using cs4,now drop the ati card i made that mistake autodesk or cad programs do not like ati cards it gives to many problems and heart ache when your pc crashes half way through a section of work and you lose it trust me i know!!quad core is much better for this work and quicker and it uses all 4 cores.

regarding gfx unless your willing to shell out for a high performace card like quadro around £1000,either go for what i have the 285 or the 260 me prefer the 285 as it works a lot better i hope this helps
