Asbestos roof removal

Hey guys,

currently buying a house and hoping to complete some time early May.

no major dramas but the wife wants the original asbestos roof removed from the garage.

I’m a surveyor and explained it’s not going to harm anyone unless you start breaking it up etc but she is adamant.

It’s about 14-15sqm of roof to be removed.

do you guys have any experience with this and the associated costs? Given my job, I am well aware of the risks of doing it myself (which I won’t be doing) and the number of irresponsible idiots who do it for a living out there who will no doubt dump it in a field
 
It is completely safe to remove yourself as long as you are careful, also it will be far cheaper for you to double bag and seal it up then take it to your local tip than getting a specialist company in to remove it and take it away for disposal.

Have a search there are a few people here that have removed and disposed of it them selves.

thank you. Honestly I would do it myself but wife absolutely will not let me. Under any circumstances.
 
I'm a licenced Asbestos Remover and do garage/shed roofs most days of the week... These sheets have minimal amounts in and if removed safely will be fine, I'm guessing they will be long sheets as it's a roof, held on by a few bolts.. If you do it yourself it will save a lot of money for sure, just do it safely

Our local tip is now refusing to accept asbestos or any plasterboard type materials. The OP should check his local area, he might have to pay to get it disposed of anyway.

Cost me £900 to completely remove a garage and chop up the base with an asbestos roof. I put the job on my builder and someone responded who specialises in asbestos and had really good feedback

Pretty good price £900... Some quotes for garage and roof removals I've seen have been over £1500 :eek:

Did mine myself, with help from my brother, whos an works for a large scale industrial insurer and got advice from a few surveyors who said based on type can be perfectly fine to DIY with the correct precautions. Ours was white asbestos / cement corrugated roof panels. brought plenty of protection gear, masks, goggles, suits, gloves etc. Proper bags for disposal, and just top and bottomed a few sheets using 2 bags and duck tape.

Something you might be surprised at is your local council may have a recycling centre / tip that takes the asbestos for a small fee or free. Mine did and it was a simple process.

Doing it on a wet day is even better, just in case of deteriorated pieces breaking. Alternatively nothing stopping you using the garden hose to keep things damp.

Actually upon reading this thread I've asked the local council (Dundee city) and actually they do offer processing of it, you need to purchase their plastic roll and tape costing £80 and drop it off to them but it seems you can so it yourself.

So I'd probably attempt that rather than paying £700+ might be different if I was keeping the garage though.
 
I offerered my mother in laws concrete garage on facebook for collection and a couple guys came round with a big trailer The conditions were that they also took the asbestos roof.

We definitely got the better end of the deal!
 
I am in two minds about asbestos.

On the one hand, I know full well that very large numbers of people suffer health problems as a result of historic exposure, and more arise every year.

On the other hand, anybody born before the late 70's (Even later perhaps) would have grown up in a world totally riddled with asbestos.

Hands up everybody who can remember those flaky Asbestos Iron stands on the ironing board or those asbestos simmering pads that you used with the cooker (And which flaked off and the hot air from the gas flame carried microscopic fibres all round the house)

So, yes, asbestos is potentially dangerous. But its not like its bloody Novichok! otherwise everybody over 50 would be dead or dying!

Old asbestos needs to be treated with care. But the paranoia over it is ridiculous!

(Oh, and another thing, there are risks associated with "Not" using asbestos. It is pretty much the "Only" truly fireproof insulating material. Grenfell was cladded not to make it pretty, but to meet "Green" targets for thermal insulation. Had Asbestos insulation been used. The fire wouldnt have happened and the people wouldnt have died!)
