Asking for a payrise - how to play it?

If I asked for a pay rise in my job, I'd get laughed at and be looking for a new job very quickly lol

Why?

It depends on how it's approached - I don't think it would come accross like that if done tactfully.

Like I said, if you've asked and its been turned down I don't know how it can be done tactfully to say you started looking for new work. If you were in a position and said a company had approached you and offered you more money (with out asking for a pay rise first) I think that would work.

But like I said thats just my opinion and I've seen it done a few times and just think its a crap way of going about it.

I've always found the best way to get a pay rise is to show them an offer letter from somewhere willing to pay you more. It has the added benefit of exposing you to your job market and to the market averages. It gives you CV tailoring experience, interview exposure, and gets you decent recruitment contacts who specialise in your industry and can remain in contact with in future should any really good opportunities arise.

It's a fair bit of work to do, but if you want more money then you have to put the effort in. If you're worried it might offend then you're sitting under poor management or you've mixed business with personal life and should probably just get out regardless.

I get a 1.5% raise this time round, last year it was 6%, the year before that 11%.

I think approaching them with your intention due to financial circumstance is the best option.

If you actually wanted to stay at your current job you should have told your manager you had a job offer and would be considering it over the course of the weekend / week and if they wanted to discuss your job / role you would be happy to do so prior to making any decision.

Worked for me at my last company twice, then they refused to negotiate with anyone who came in with a job offer!
A mate of mine even blagged it and said he had a job offer when he didnt, got him a 5k payrise!

It all depends on how your relationship is with you overall boss, I (jokingly) said to my CIO that I deserve more money and we are now discussing this in my 1st review (only been here 4 months!), on the other side of things I let someone go two weeks ago for badgering me about a pay rise, even though 1. He had literally only just joined us (you knew what the rates were!) and 2. He wasn't good enough to justify a rise yet.

Yeah, I think in the past I was a little naive and thought that going the extra mile would be "noticed" and I would be offered an incentive to keep doing so...

Yup, and you set a new "standard" which they will always expect of you.
