Asking for bank details on first interview?

I have an interview with someone for a job in a couple of hours. I believe it to be through a recruitment firm although the interview is being conducted at my local job centre.

The person asked for me to bring my passport, bank details, and reference details. No CV, which I found a tad bit strange but will bring anyway.

In the few interviews I've had none of them have asked for me to bring along my bank details. Is this the norm? Does this sound fishy? The job is advertised as immediate start which may be the reason why.

Of course if the person asks for them without any contract set out or forms to sign etc I'll just state something along the lines of "I'm not comfortable sharing that information when I haven't been accepted into the job yet".

Exactly this. I have never been asked for my bank details until I've signed a contract.

Mate take your bank details with you, ask why they need them straight away and if their explanation sounds reasonable then its fine, i mean its at job center you really think they would conduct an interview there to gain access to people accounts?! don't think so :P

Well if they are going to setup your details it's best to have bank information with you.

Also they probably want to also have proof of your address.

May also be a good way to see what wage you were on and offer similar ;-)

I think recruitment firms do this don't they? Part of registering with them, so even if you don't get the job they can offer you future jobs?

In which case you can provide your details to the new employer directly. I'd question why any agency would want your bank details unless you are contracting and the agency are paying your wages.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It being one of those places where you actually work for them, they get paid by the employer, take a slice and give you the rest. If it's not then I'd onlt be giving my bank details to the people I'm signing a contract with!

If it is immediate start and it is an agency they might want them so they can start paying you as soo as you start working. Although like others have said i would just ask them, but probably wait until they bring it up as you don't want that to the first thing you say to them :)

All the fuss was over nothing. Turns out it was a recruitment agency I signed up for but the job I applied for is available on immediate start so they needed my details so they could put me through the payroll system (I'm guessing) after my induction on thursday/friday. Awesome.
