Well i guess here is a good starting point?

Firstly sorry if i don't come across well or give the right amount of detail in my first post it's just a hard subject for me to talk about.

OK so i need help, for many many years i was over weight, might still be that's one thing i need help with? Anyway.

Over the last 18 months I've lost nearly 9 stone in weight, just thought eating better, eating smaller portions and increasing the (Little) amount of exercise i do. However I've reached a point where i'm not sure if I've got more weight to loose or i'm good on the weight and it time to work on other parts of the whole bigger picture?

OK here some details.

I'm 6' 3-4"
18 months ago weighed 23st (322.8lbs)
Now i'm 14.5st (203lbs) +/- 3lbs

So here what i need help/advice with

I'm just not sure what i should be weighing? I've looked online and it really isn't the same on any 2 websites i look at.

Also as a result of being so big to start with and loosing the weight as quickly as i did at the start i have a lot of excess skin, how can i get rid of this?

And lastly i know i need to work out more in some form, i feel as if i'm not strong enough, if that makes sense? I mean i don't feel i have good strength in my back, legs or arms.

Again sorry if this doesn't make sense, if i need to explain better or i need to give more info please ask, as i really want to makes things better for myself.

Thanks

James

1) There is no set 'weight' for a person - some people in here will have, for example, a BMI well into the obese range when actually they're just in great shape. Do you look like you need to lose some fat? If yes, then that's about as good of a measure as any.

2) It depends on how big the excess is. You will look better if you put on some muscle - undoubtedly - but loose skin is a tricky business and, again depending on severity, other options may be the only way forward. Certainly hitting the weights won't do any harm.

3) Google: 'Stronglifts 5x5', 'Starting Strength' or 'push/pull legs split' for starters. Any programme that incorporates the big lifts (deadlift, squat, bench) is a good starter, and most progressive barbell routines will see you well.

Just my 2p!

Well, where you say you're not sure what you SHOULD be weighing, the real question is what are you're goals?

Are you pleased with your appearance in the mirror? If no, then why, and how do you WANT to look?

Once you've really addressed these questions, it will be possible to provide a somewhat reasonable response to your core question. And also, an approach to hopefully help you get there.

Thanks for that, will give the Google searches a look. I'm thinking about either joining a GYM, although past attempts at this have resulted in me not keeping at it because i feel uncomfortable in a gym or turning some space at home into a GYM area. Can those things be done in a home gym?

Thanks for your input.

My first goal when starting to lose weight was to reach 200lbs which would give me a BMI of 25, however i'm concerned that the excess skin i have is affecting my weight measurement? And apart from the excess skin i'm happy with how i look in the mirror apart from muscle definition.

Thanks

James

You could do all these programs at home, it will cost quite a bit of money though. Personally I would go for the gym, people will probably not pay attention too you they will be busy with there training.

The excess skin from 20 odd stone will probably weigh a few pounds I guess, can you not place it in the palm of your hand and estimate? Do the NHS not offer free surgery to people affected by excess skin that have proven their commitment to lose weight?

Exercise will probably help your overall appearance but it will have little impact on reducing the excess skin. :(

If you lose the weight through your own hard work and commitment, no. If you lose weight because they've stomach stapled you and you're too lazy to sort your life out, they will pay for excess skin removal surgery. Yay, England.
