Hi

Ok, this may be a little difficult to explain, but ill give it a go.

Ive got Windows XP on my PC. Ive recently reformatted and since then nobody else in my house who is on our network can see my shares. It keeps prompting for a username and password. Ive set things up the exact same way I have before, Turned off simple file sharing, run the network setup wizard, tunred on file and printer sharing. All this usually works. You can either click on my PC in the MSHOME workgroup, or type \\mypcname in explorer and get to my shared folders, and my shared printers. C$, D$ etc could then be used to get access to my drives using my own username and password. This is not happening now. any access to my PC requires a username and password. Im stuck. I have seen this before, but gave up trying to fix it and eneded up reformatting. Im sure its just a simple registry file or option somewhere, but I cant for the life of me find it.

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers

For the account you are using on PC-A, you need a matching (same username and password) account on PC-B, otherwise you will be asked for a username and password. You probably have not set up the user accounts on your PC that were there before.

Wrong!

I have access to all the other peoples in my house, and all the others had access to mine up untill i reformatted. None of us have user accounts on any machine other than our own. you do not need Password access for the default shared folder, shared printers, or folders I have specifically shared and given read access to the user 'everyone'. This isnt something new, this is something I have had working for years. Some setting in my reformat has changed...

You won't be able to access the shares with no password unless you have enabled the Guest account and given it permission to access the shares/files.

Again, I have never enabled the guest account, and never given guests access to files. None of the other PCs in this house have guest enabled. I have followed the exact same method as I have on every other PC install ive ever done, and only ever had this issue twice. the Share Docs folder, and any Shared Printers are accessable to anyone on your network if you turn on file and printer sharing, regardless of whether the guest account is active.

Edit:

Going to try to explain this a bit better.

I have 2 computers, a Laptop and a PC. Both are setup the same. Both have Windows XP Pro, both have just me as a user with a password on my acount, and this is the same on both machines, on both machines the Guest Account is OFF, Simple File Sharing is OFF, Network Setup Wizard has been run and File and Printer Sharing has been turned ON.

I can access all shares between machines, including the default shares of C$, D$ etc as I have an identical user account on both machines. The other users in my house however do not have my user account on their machines, or their account on mine.

The Shared Docs folder from my Laptop shows up in all other users Network Places Folder, the PCs Shared Docs folder does not.
Both PC and Laptop show up in Workgroup Computers for all other users
Clicking on my Laptop for all other users shows all shares and printers on that machine
Clicking on my PC for all other users prompts for a username and password

Turning on the Guest account on my PC just changes the password prompt to a message saying that the user does not have access to this machine, with OK as the only option, and no access given.

I have access to all other Shared Docs folders on the 2 XP and 1 Vista (its called Public on Vista) machines in the house from both my PC and laptop.

there therefore must be a setting difference between the 2 machines that is not covered by Guest Accounts, Advanced File Sharing, or turning on File and Printer Sharing...
