I am runnig xp on this laptop and on random occasions windows just starts beeping like when you plug in a usb device and take it out again.

This goes on for a minute or so and then stops.

any ideas what it could be?

Bluetooth? My acer often plays the disconnect sound repeatedly upto 20-30 minutes after initially switching bluetooth off.

That happened to me on my old ThinkPad running W7. I could never fix it, but these guys did. Unfortunately my ThinkPad died shortly after so I couldn't try out that fix.
