Gentlemen and ladies,

I apologise for my enquiry being outside of the normal Asrock thread, but I don't want this to get lost on page 82!

Would I be better getting 2 x 1gb DDR sticks instead of my 4 x 512mbs DDRs currently installed?

I run on a 64 4000+ with PCIe XFX 7800GT and use the rig for intense gaming.

TIA, Kirkmeister

Welcome to OcUK forums :)

2x1Gb gives better performance than 4x512mb due to limitations of the A64 memory controller.

The Gskill ZX is ideal and a good price.

Q. Should I buy 2x1Gb or 4x512Mb?

A. For those running on AMD 64-bit CPU's it has to be 2x1Gb DIMMS for the best performance possible. This has always been preferable, but the main reason for doing this is for two reasons.

Reason 1 :- Higher overclocks are possible.

Reason 2 :- A 1T Command Rate can be used which is important when trying to keep timings tight and getting the best from your system.

If you run 4x512 DIMMS then depending on what core revision you have, the system will either run at 333Mhz 1T or 400Mhz 2T. Obviously this is different if running on an Intel system.

***Command Rate determines whether a chip select can be executed in a single clock or whether it needs two or more clocks. In DDR the CMD rate offers a bigger boost in performance than CAS latency, with 1T command being the best currently available.***
More here

hahah asrock bopard has problems with running 1T with anything more than 1 stick of ram. good luck getting it stable.

I run 2 x 1mb sticks of Mushkin PC3200 with my CPU o/c'd and it runs 1T perfectly stable.

You are a lucky man ;)

what bios do you use? memory speed?

Latest BIOS from the Asrock site, memory speed is 216.8mhz (processor is back down to 2.6ghz from 2.85ghz due to the heat in here but it's still a good overclock)

shame, my overclock is 100% stable regardless of the weather outside. what cooler are you using? its easy to cool down the a64. im using a big typhoon.

I've gotta say I'm underclocking from 220 to 210 - summer mode on :)

btw, can all you guys who claim 1T stable, copy any paste to paint?
