Hi all,

I am having a strange problem when I boot up. I looked in the Bios and found that for some reason my PC keeps defaulting to another hard drive, namely my IDE deskstar.

This does not happen everytime i boot up.

I have three hard drives, 1 Raptor (36g -set to default and second to boot after floppy) which has the Xp Op. System on it and games. This is the only drive I have specified in my bios to boot up.

2nd a Seagate 250 (SATA ii - All other program files, MP3's etc) and finally a 80 gig IBM Deskstar (IDE - and currently redundent).

The only reason I have not taken the Deathstar out is that I was thinking of using it for back ups (but not got around to it yet).

I have no idea why the Bios keeps jumping to the IBM (I do save the changes each time on the BIOS and resume normal boot up with the Raptor) and was wondering how I remedy this?

thanks

HELP!!!!

I am using bios 1.90

and now after fiddling (removing the Deskstar and trying to make the wiring to the other 2 SATA drives). I am having a larger problem. I cannot boot up. I get as far as the windows splash screen and then I get a blank screen

I removed the IDE Deskstar which was empty and tried to boot. I get to the windows splash screen and then nothing.. complete blank screen.

I thought this might be down to incorrect plugging in of the power leads and the SATA cables to the motherboard. I have the Raptor (OS on it) to SATA (1) and the Seagate to SATA (2). Tried to reboot and was given options for safe mode, last known functioning config, start windows normally. Tried safe mode and got a very strange screen full of text.

tried normal.. blank screen.

I have now put the IDE Deskstar back in and tried again.

blank screen after windows splash.

I then went back into the bios to check Boot settings and the settings have changed yet again on their own. Can anyone help??

I am typing this from my laptop and cannot see the woods for the trees on this one!

thanks.

and just checking.. the raptor has two power points on the back of it.. A SATA one and traditional molex (i think that is what they are callled).. which one do I plug back in for power to the drive?

Completely confused.

update.. Removed all drives except Raptor... Nothing.... then strangely after dark screen for about 10 minutes.. the welcome screen started!!!

Just rebooted with both Raptor and Seagate in (removed the IDE drive) and rebooted fine.

Has anyone got an idea what the hell is going on with my computer???

just afew more questions:

1. what devices are on what channels. is it:

SATA II - 250GB SEAGATE
SATA SLOT 1 - RAPTOR
SATA SLOT 2 - NONE

IDE PRIMARY MASTER - ?
IDE PRIMARY SLAVE - ?
IDE SECONDARY MASTER - ?
IDE SECONDARY SLAVE - ?

2. the boot order is:

FIRST - FLOPPY
SECOND - HDD
THIRD - ?
FORTH - ?

3. HDD boot order set to:

-RAPTOR
-SEAGATE
-DEATHSTAR

There are a couple of things you could try, try selecting cable select on the jumper of the ide drive as here(http://forums.techpowerup.com/archive/index.php/t-9420.html)

try an earlier bios 1.5 was the most stable I had.

see if you can post some digi pics of your bios screens that'll help.

also asrock state that DO NOT place an ide HDD on the same channel as an optical drive.

Hi Iron Horse,

Tried Seagate on SATA II and it was not being recognised. I have taken the Deathstar out of my rig now.. seems to be running ok.. but still wondering why I cannot get Seagate on SATA II. Which Bios pics would help diagnose?

thanks

did you put the sata II drivers in from the mobo disc?

as previous question, was the deathstar on it's own ide or shared with cd rom?

was it master or slave?

take a snap of all screenshots, it's been a while since i had this board. lol. I had cold boot probs as well so swapped to the asus board.

Hi Iron Horse.. forgive my lack of knowlege.. how to I 1)get two copies of the different bios screens (ctrl Prt Scrn?). 2)How do I insert them into the post.

thanks

you'll need to photo the screen with a digi camera then upload the photos to the internet (imageshack) or your own web space and then link them into your post
