Hi. I have a Asrock K8-Upgrade VM800 Mobo and I'm trying to run the onboard sound and a PCI sound card in the same PC. I used to be able to do this on an old gigabyte celeron (433mhz) Mobo that I had. I would simply go to control panel > Sound and audio devices and change from onbaord to PCI card. This was win98 though.

For some reason my Asrock mobo only lets me install one sound device - either the onboard sound or the PCI card. If I install the PCi card and try to install the onboard sound from my Mobo CD it says it can't find an onbaord sound device.

The reason I want to do this is because my PCI card is is a low latency joby that I want to use with Cubase sx + Reason.

I'm thinking of getting a better MOBO to see if it will let me use both.

i really can't see the need to use both, just disable the onboard one in bios. I had the same board not too long ago and managed to use a creative soundcard fine once i disabled the onboard one. remember and disable the midi too in bios.

I need to use both.

I need to use the low latency sound card in Cubase/Reason and the onboard sound for playing games (bf2 etc.) The PCI sound card doesn't work properly when playing games. The PCI sound card is a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 by the way.

I know it isn't much help with your specific problem but there are some external USB soundcards about that aren't that expensive, £20 - £30 or so, would they be sufficient for your games?

I'm just thinking they might work better for what you want to do.
