ASRock has added a temperature probe to the GPU end of its new 12V-2×6 power cables. This sensor can be plugged into your power supply to add “Cable Over-Temperature Protection” to your 12V-2×6 cable. This feature is patented and only available with ASRock’s new Taichi and Phantom Gaming PSU.

Actually sounds like a great idea but it's a shame it's even needed really! It's nice also that it shuts down rather than requiring software

I remember when Hiper PSUs had the game changing innovation of blowing up of their own accord, completely eliminating the need to worry about your GPU overheating the connector.

Seasonic is apparently planning something to stop the connectors melting:

Makes me wonder who got how much of a back hander for the utter disaster the 12VHPWR connector is to become an ATX 3.X or "PCI-E" standard as some outlets claim, it actually wasn't at launch and was added at a later date despite the blatant issues after Nvidia pushed it.

It's actually been revised since and still has problems, it was clearly never properly tested and frankly isn't fit for purpose and never was for anything that might actually genuinely stress the connector.
