What components affect how high your overclock can go?
Is it the CPU only or CPU + board + cooler?
I'm basically playing Arma3 at 1440p and going from a GTX 770 to a new 1070 made bugger all difference to my FPS, the game actually benefits more from a higher cpu clock speed. I can tell the difference between 4-4.5Ghz so aiming for a higher overclock would grant me a better experience overall.
I'm using an ASRock Z97 Extreme4 with a 4790K, cooled by a Corsair H105 but no matter what I do, I cannot seem to go any higher than 4.5GHz which is at 1.250vcore. I've seen many other people hit 4.6GHz at around 1.250v and much lower vcore for 4.5GHz.
At these settings, prime95 will retsart my PC after about 15 minutes but Aida64 will happily run for over an hour. Also, I have happily gamed for atleast 4-5 hours straight without any issues or restarts so for me I can say 4.5GHz is stable here at 1.250v.
At 4.6GHz I can boot into windows at 1.300v but Aida64 will blue screen after a few minutes and prime95 will restart the PC instantly after starting the small FFT's test so If i was to be stable at 4.6GHz I would need atleast around 1.350v which is too high for 24/7 use?
Is it the CPU that is a bad clocker or could it just be the motherboard is giving out too much voltage?
Also if anyone here has an ASRock Z97 board with an overclocked CPU I'd be very grateful as to what settings you tweaked in the bios
my overclock settings are:
CPU ratio - all core
All core - 45
CPU cache ratio - 40
Spread spectrum - disabled
Intel Speedstep technology - disabled
CPU vcore voltage mode - override
Vcore override voltage - 1.250v
All other settings left on default/auto.
Thing is, if its a badly binned cpu, I still have a week left so i can return it to Amazon for a refund and try another one so hoping to take a chance on that.
