I played the first one and found it really bad and stopped playing 1/3 of the way through.
Because of this, I didn't play any others.

The new one coming out does look really good.

Do I need to complete the others to understand the story in the new one?
Are the others better then the first one? Should I play through them?

AC2 & ACB were both really good, revelations & AC3 were pretty forgettable.

The first ones made me not want to stop playing until I'd completed them (including 100% achievements), AC3 I pre-ordered and ended up playing 15 minutes on the 360. Sold that after my 360 died and recently bought it again for the PC (figured I'd play through it before the new one comes out) but I'm still struggling to stick with playing it. I'm not sure what they've done wrong with AC3 but it just doesn't seem right.

I would say give the others a play through if you can get them cheap. If not, just watch the video r3d zombie posted

I still hope to finish AC3 at some point and won't let the bad experience of that one stop me from getting the new one

Certainly play AC1 to 3 in order if you are going to play any of those, but I think the story is going in a new direction now so it shouldn't matter too much after 3.

Lots of people have different opinions of course, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every Assassin's Creed game to date.

Finished all AC parts to date. It gets better with each part tho AC3 wasn't that good to me.
Story more or less connected with each part so I think you have to finish to have more clear picture as in AC: Revelations you'll have Altair's story too.

I played through all of them up to the release of AC3 which I just couldn't get into and can't see myself going back to. They'll have to do something pretty spectacular with IV to get me back into it.

Yes the others are better than the first one, if you don't want to go back to AC then I would definitely start with AC2 as the story does progress. AC2-AC:B-AC:R in particular are essentially a trilogy and should be played back to back.
