Hi All

On Saturday night I was seriously assaulted. I was having a quiet drink in a pub in Cardiff when for no apparent reason I was punched in the face. I was taken to hospital where they found I have a broken nose, cheekbone and possible damage to my right eye. I have to go back Wednesday to see a surgeon about my cheekbone, they may have to rebuild it. Also, an eye specialist to going to check on the progress of my eye they won't know if there's permament damage until around 10 days after the event.

I feel like absolute crap at the moment. :(

Yes for no reason. The security in the pub chucked him out, they are supposed to detain him. Lucky enough, the police caught him an hour later. I have witnesses, the police have taken pictures of my injuries and taken a statement from myself. Apparently, the guy is known for this. They have released him on bail although they said they need to wait on medical evidence from the hospital before they can charge him. This will take three months.

Sorry but WHAT? The guy assulted you publically, regardless of 'medical evidence'!! Sue the police!

I will have to confirm it but I think depending on the outcome of my injuries is whether they charge with ABH / GBH. I'm not sure on the difference. I will check on Wednesday as I have to go to an ID parade.

I was punched through my car window (which was closed) when sat in traffic for absolutely no reason and my eye socket was fractured.

Police took a statement but refused to check cameras of the area or do anything else. They said it would be pointless to investigate and shrugged it off as a steroid abuser, which was probably true, but not the kind of person you want walking the streets assualting people on a busy saturday afternoon in broad daylight.

I wouldn't let the Police idssuade you from proscecuting this guy and pushing for loss of earnings and distress etc. For all the people out there who get assualted and can't do anything about it, people like this need to be made an example of. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope your eye is OK.

Sorry to hear about that. Can I ask how long for the swelling on your eye to go down? My eye is shut at the moment.

1) shame it happened to you
2) What can you really expect from this ? a couple of hundred quid compensation, week or 2 of looking a tool, and an uneasy feeling u are going to have for the rest of your life about every other human you ever meet or see.

I wouldn't dwell on it, there's going to be no justice for the guy, the police wont care too much just take your compensation and move on.

A few people have mentioned a fund that the goverment pay into so I may be able to claim compensation for this. I will have to look it up.

Sue them? Are you American?

They're following procedure. They can't hold the guy in a cell for 3 months for punching someone. As horrible as it is and as bad as I feel for the OP, there's no proof *yet* of any long term damage. I suspect that if there is, they'll snap him up immediatly and deal with him appropriately. If there isn't, they'll follow the procedure of something less serious and charge him for "affray" or something.

There's no point in being angry at the Police about it. If they arrested and held everyone who started a fight in a bar the prisons would be more full than they are now. The important thing is the OP's speedy recovery and no lasting damage. The justice will come eventually.

I agree with you. Fair play to the police they have been very helpful and supportive. And the words of one detective taking my statement 'we are going to nail this git to the wall'.

If the OP is still reading this please take advantage of the Victim Support Service that I hope you have been offered - they're excellent people and often have been victims of similar sorts of crimes - they can help.

Secondly ensure that at some point you make enquiries to obtain a CICA claim form. An article as to what they do can be found here:-

Thanks for the advice. A solicitor is going to contact me later today regarding a claim. I may be able to claim a substantial amount of money. At the moment though I just want to get better.
