Assigning network address?

Hi all

Reformatted an old computer last night (Dell with windows xp). Reinstalled all drivers today but now it doesn't seem to want to connect to the Internet?

It says there was a problem due to the fact that the network did not assign a network address to the computer?

Tried running the winsock fix but with no joy.

Just done an ipconfig and the default gateway seems to be blank?

It was working ok earlier and then I installed xp service pack 3.

I am trying to connect wireless by my wireless adapter. Three other computers in the house can connect wireless fine, so unsure as to what the problem is here?

Any ideas?

How would I check DHCP?

I have a password on the router that I typed into the computer? It's connected to the router but not the internet it seems?

Thanks,
Tom

They just connected straight away. But this one will connect to the router (I can access router admin panel) but not the internet because it can not assign an ip address ?

Really annoying. Do you have anymore ideas?

Thanks
Tom

Are you 100% sure you ahve the right wireless key? Do you have to use a wireless association button on the router to allow a computer to connect?

Connecting but no ip, I get this frequently with clients on XP when using the key wrong.

This,

There are a few other things you can try. If you're using the wireless card manufacturer's wireless tool don't, use the windows one.

Get the latest drivers for the wireless adaptor from the manufacturer's web site.

Have a look on the routers and see if you can find out what channel you're using. Some wireless adaptors don't work with channel 12 or 13.

Oh just double check you're connecting to the right network, I have once spent quite a long time scratching my head only to discover I was trying to join the wrong network.

Check the key on the router, depending on what router you have it will be under wireless settings and probably in clear text.

If not then get on a PC that does work on the wireless and download wirelesskeyview this will list the wireless key hopefully which you can then use on the problematic Dell.

type in ipconfig / all to a cmd prompt

does anything there look familiar (in terms of addresses) is your gateway / dns your routers address?

goto network properties and right click on your NIC goto properties

click on tcp/ip4 and again goto propertirs

input the correct IP address job done

subnet is likely to be 255.255.255.0

gateway + dns likely to be you router ip address

in terms of an IP just find an ip of the machines which work and add 1

Cheers for the help guys.

Checked the wireless key on the router and it is WEP, it is also WEP on the computer so that seems ok.

I manually assigned an ip like you suggested Yakyb and this seems to have solved the problem a little, I no longer get an error message saying limited or no connectivity. However I can still not get a web page to appear.

Done a quick test and this message came back ...

"Check IP for default IP vs DHCP assigned IP - FAILED"

Any ideas?

The key may be wep but is it the correct key you are using?

Manual ip will get rid of the error but if the keys wring you still won't be able to connect.

Do you have another new devic you could potentially connect wirelessly to test?

I have my wireless laptop that is connected to the network fine?

Do I need to compare settings? If so, which?

Regards.
