Currently I have a AMD 939 based PC running an Opteron 165, but want to upgrade it to something a bit more powerful.

My original thoughts were to get my hands a Phenom but I understand that i7 may be the way to go these days.

So my original quandry of whether to get AM2+ and DDR2 or AM3 and DDR3 has widened to include i7.

As a side comment I didnt want to really go and spend money on new graphics cards as I have a pair of 8800GT cards that I'm using in my current PC, which seem to be giving me what I do for now at least.

Given a budget of around £500-600 for motherboard, cpu and memory, where should I be putting my money?

Hmm so with your 500-600 is that just including the mobo, ram and cpu.?

what hardware do you have just now you are going to use.?
monitor size will you be using.?
do you have an os.?

Ok...

Current System Spec

Hiper 580 PSU
ASUS A8N32-SLI
AMD Opteron 165
2 x XFX 8800GT XXX 1GB
4GB Memory
2 x 500GB (but have a few more Sata Drives here)
2 DVD-RW Drives

Currently residing in an ASUS Tower Case

Operating System wise...at the moment Vista Ultimate x64
LG227WT monitor running at 1680x1050

Apart from surfing the net and using Office for work stuff, I'm not a hardcore gamer but I play them. But I'm also using the system for Photoshop work and am looking at getting into video post-production work.

Hmm you would need a new psu and case imo,

how about this.?
