Basically i want to set up some form of wireless network in my house. We have two PCs in the house, my PC and my Dad's/the family PC (which is not that good). My Dad mainly uses the internet to check his email, and my brother to look at football stuff. I on the other hand use the internet to play CS:S and maybe do abit of homework, and for me to play on CS:S i have to steal the modem from upstairs and connect it to my PC but then while im playing my dad will come in and say he needs to check his email etc etc. Basically i need to know what i need to buy so that i can play on CS:S, while my dad checks his email etc etc, with me playing on a relativly low ping (i useually get 20-40).

My PC Specs

X2 3800
DFI LanParty SLI-D
2Gb OCZ RAM

My Dad's PC/family PC
Emachines 740
1.6Ghz P4
1.5Gb RAM
64mb graphics card.

The broadband that i am using is Tiscali 2mb unlimited. Please dont say anything about that my dad pays for it, so as long as i have broadband i aint bothered that much. The two PCs are basically underneath each other, mine downstairs and the other upstairs, the one upstairs is about 3 foot to the left of mine downstairs.

So can you guys give me some advice on what to buy wireless wise, or would it be better to get some form of wired network? (I can go wired, because i can run all the wires through the attic, and drill some holes in the floor if needed).

If you're going wireless, a wireless ADSL modem/router and a pair of wireless network cards is what you need really. You can do it without the router using an 'ad hoc' network and Windows Internet Connection Sharing but a router would be better.

Your mileage may vary on the wireless front though - they've very much dependant on the house construction, layout, etc. Using a wired network (usually) just works. If you go that way, two wired network cards and any ADSL modem/router (wireless or not) will do.

Excellent thanks.

So would getting 2 Netgear FA311 Network Cards and a Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall be a good combination?

And obviously some wires. (ill have to measure how far it is from one PC to another first, right wheres my torch)
