Hello all

I have been upgrading my rig recently and decided that i should pay more attention to temperatures of my CPU.

I am running an AMD Phenom X4 965 BE on a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UDP4 Mobo with an aftermarket cooler.

I have been playing Empire Total War and had a few crashes so i thought i would check what temp the CPU was running at. After a crash it was showing as being 77 degrees Centrigrade.

This seems a little high to me. Can anyone confirm or deny this thought?

yes it seems high, particulariy if it was running at idle after the crash/reboot when you got the 77C.
Check again to see if that is an idle temp, you might need to reseat the heatsink.

You prob know this stuff already, but just in case, check the TIM spread when you do to see how the heatsink was sitting. Remember to clean with lint free cloth (or lint free kitchen paper works fine) and reapply new TIM.
Run a cpu stress test such as orthos and keep an eye on the temp after.

I'm running the 955 RB-C2 which is not as good regarding heat and power ussage. When I had mine running on a basic cooler it stress tested at 58/60c so deffently high temps. Im running it on a H50 sealed Water unit which is up to medium / high end air equivilent and highest temp today clocked at 3.7ghz was 52c playing BFBC2. In general tho I wouldnt be happy if it went over 60c with aftermarket cooler. mines currently idle @ 30c and 77c seems very close to the shutdown temps of that processor.

Thanks for the advice

I decided to have a bit of a play. Bought myself some new TIM and a couple of new case fans. Removed the Heatsink and fan (which is still a royal pain in the butt) and gave that a good clean. It seems that there wasnt a particularly good spread so im gonna have to take the blame for that....

Removed the old stuff and reapplied some new TIM. System is now running at a balmy 45C when idle and when running the same game as last night the temp never broke the 60C barrier.

For £15 i managed to knock 17 degrees from my CPU temp...not too bad in the grand scheme of things :)

Which is a good Stress test to use? Quite a few versions of that Orthos out there and i didnt know which was the right 1 for me.

Cheers again chaps :)

Hi, Glad you fixed your temps; The first time I applied tim I also had to reapply and dropped temps by 10c :). I havnt tried many stress testing apps as I dont do a massive amount of overclocking a few tweeks here and there to the best of my ability being a novice :). I use prime95 64bit, seems todo the trick for me.

lol what I posted the other day I have just blown out the water. I just changed the air flow around in my case and prime95 is now 45c  absolutely amazed at how badly it was before. my cpu now idles at 27c and maxed at 45c.

77c is way to hot for that chip, you need to keep it below 65c max. As eddyr said, check and reseat your CPU cooler.

Agreed Max

Since i reseated and reapplied it hasnt breached the 60c barrier once even under heavy load.

Just need to remember to keep my peepers on this in the future :)

If you need a good stress test, run prime95.
Glad to see your all ok now and your temps are lower :)
