No, I have not made a thread to ask what you guys think about this car because I am NOT looking at buying one.

I recently had to drive one of these dreadful, underpowered bland wagons for over 400 miles round trip, half of which was motorway and half single lane A-roads (do you feel for me? :( ) What a nightmare! Overtaking became a live/die lottery, the ride was so uncomfortable because the driving position was awkward (not to mention the obligatory naff seats) and OMG the indicators.

"Welll, what did I expect?" you may ask me. Maybe something a little better at least as I did read that this model has "a surprising amount of power and torque on offer from this little diesel".

All trump, no poo :D

That will be all

For all those of you there reading this and thinking the diesel astra gets a bad rep here; it is justified.
1.7DTi Astra was the worst diesel car I ever drove.
Perhaps the worst car...

meh i had a 1.7cdti hatchback (new shape) and it was OK. Fast enough and 60mpg. Nice half leather interior dab radio etc etc.

Best thing was the 30k service interval, put 59k on it in 3 years and it only needed one service :)

lol - You're slagging of a 1.3TD for being nothing special!

I was sharing my misfortune of having to drive this for so long. 7 hours I sat in that thing! I was under false pretenses having read several positive reviews about it.

I was just hoping for some emotional support, I'm sorry :(

I can imagine 7 hours in it wouldnt be nice, at all.

Have a virtual hug :p

400 miles in a 1.3 CDTI. I feel for you. :(

I had to drive my boss's 1.7CDTI to and from the post office once, and that was almost too much for me.

I really, really fail to understand your expectations. You got from A to B didn't you?

Edit:
I did read that this model has "a surprising amount of power and torque on offer from this little diesel"
What, like it's got a hamster in the wheel rather than a mouse? :p

I think it was just the shock at how bad a car can actually be I suppose. I shall never buy a diesel and I hope this thread will put off anyone who has the bizarre idea of buying this model.

There are worse cars, believe me. There's too many people in the Motors section who drive slow, new cars and say how it's the worst thing ever. Really, it isn't. Drive a 1.3 Austin Montego for example and perhaps it will shed some light on what things used to be like. You youngsters lead really sheltered lives.

I thought that these new Astras were supposedly okay cars compared to the admittedly hideous previous generation?
This is the point. If you've never driven the previous generation, how can you compare it? If it's being compared to Civic R's or 3 litre BMW's then there's really not much more to say.

My 1st car was a 1986 1.4l 205, I also had an escort 1.6 then clio 1.3. Plus a few spins in several other rather non-exhilarating drives. I'm not quite a youngster anymore but thanks anyway :D You however do sound old baging the "when I were a lad" drum ;) :p
