Just started noticing my exhaust sounds like a rally car or i have a big bore exhaust on my 1.6 petrol mk4 astra!

I only really noticed this weekend as i use the train to get to work and back but the exhaust sounds like i have a sports car (however not as good ha!)

Its coming from the front of the car but i cannot pinpoint it. Any ideas?

Im in two minds at the moment...as i use the train the car is only for school run/take me to the station so its not really important to me (mrs would say it is for her)

Now i heard that a leak in the front car be dangerous so i either want to fix soon or bin the car and pickup another as it was not going to last to the next MOT in Sep due to needing the brake pipes replacing and im not tempted to drop any big money on a 03 plate astra.

Firstly does anyone know where i should be looking for a leak etc? Obviously i have tried following it but i can get as far to say its from the ''front'',

Secondly, with the cost of this and the brake pipes and the possible health issue, would be be better to find a cheap 1.5k car for the time as im saving for a house deposit and dont mind if we have something for a year or two to get buy until the house it purchased next March/April hopefully if we can save 5%

cheers

Take it to a tyre/exhaust place, they will find the leak for you. Might be repairable but you can always get a quote for a replacement. Astra's are common enough and exhausts will be cheap and plentiful.

The only way to find out where it's coming from is to get underneath and have a look. Exhausts are cheap for the MK4 Astra, i replaced the front pipe, centre box and back box on mine last year for less than £100 delivered. The most expensive part is the maniverter which is a combined manifold and catalytic converter. If that's gone it's £150-220 depending on the engine fitted (tell by the engine code). Mine for example is the 1.6 litre 16v twinport which has the Z16XEP engine and can be a pain to get parts for.
