Astra SRI

If I was to go down that route- what kind of price should I be aiming to get for the parts and labour of fitting them?

Logic behind that decision?

Ten year old mass market hatchback with shagged engine and running gear, £800 quid minimum to fix it, thats the logic behind it.

By the time he is finished he will be looking at almost what the car is worth in repairs.
I personally would get it scrapped and go get another working one and save time.

Breaking it and selling the parts would be a consideration? There are plenty of parts on the car worth more than the £150 you'd get from scrap - that's if you decide it's not worth keeping and surely better than scrap value?

Lets do the sums, even if it costs him £1000 to fix he could sell it for £1500 and get £500 back.

If he scraps it he will prolly get £150, last time i checked thats less than £500 + he gets the chance to use the car, if he knows the rest of its solid then its a good idea to fix it up.

He could scrap this one for £150, buy another for £1500 and without knowing the car he could be back in exactly the same situation within a month.

It's not that clear cut IMO,
If he ebay'd the car as is, he may get a reasonable figure, I sold my 190K Mile, diesel pump knackered, non-running, veccie for £350, I think the guy just wanted to strip for parts/scrap it, not that it matters.

Being slightly more desireable then my Veccie, I'd expect he may get even more, if it pulled in £500 from this or face the £1000+ for engine/box, it's not that straight cut!.

Well scraping it (weighing it in) is now worthless . Few months ago it was £200 . I called the other day and was offered £10 ...Give it a little longer and you will be paying to scrap it ...

Persil

As I said, flogging it on the bay is the way to go, people buy them to strip for spares etc, and then scrap the body, my local scrapper offered me £150 3 weeks ago, but I decided to 'bay' it and more then doubled that!

So £800ish to get the car back on the road or £1800 for say another car minimum?

I was in a similar situation with my ST24, cost me about £800 to get it back on the road but this was upgrading suspension etc. I saw it as a decent shell and I couldnt buy another car for the same amount of money. If you plan on keeping it a while longer just get some more quotes and try get the price down.

probably this

Somebody would love an Astra SRI interior as a cheap upgrade for their old astra

similarly with the wings and doors etc..

Considering its worth £1500 max, and needs a new engine and new gearbox, i'd see what you can get for it on ebay selling as to be stripped for parts

If you can get more than say £500 for it, you'd be better off than if you repaired it and sold it.

Well the quote I have had is for the cambelt problem and damage only. If the damage means that a new engine is required am I right in thinking I could get another engine fitted for around that same £800 mark?

As I said in the original post, what makes the decision even more difficult is the gear box could go sometime soon as well. Which would mean in all I'd have to spend around the total value of the car anyway.

get it on ebay as sold for parts.

Explain that the mechanic says the engine is damaged by the camblet failing, but you dont know what and havent paid the mechanic money to find out yet. Similarly, explain the gearbox has gone as well and will need replacing.

It will probably get bought either buy a breaker to break it down for spares, or by a cowboy who'll bodge repair it and sell it on to some other halfwit, who wont have a clue they're buying a money pit

Either way, its out of your hair and saves you an £800 repair bill.

I want to know where this definite £800 bill comes from?

The sensible thing to do is spend a while to see if you can source a secondhand engine and box for a reasonable price. It's a common or garden Ecotec engine, used in a million Astras, Cavaliers, Calibras, Vectras etc. so it will be neither hard to source nor expensive to buy. Labour for a complete engine and box swap shouldn't be too bad, it could be comfortably done in less than a day, and of course you wouldn't be taking this to a main dealer to do.

I think it is worth looking into a replacement engine...assuming of course that it needs one. How reliable is this mechanic because I wouldn't take my car to anyone I didn't trust. Do your own research, there are loads of Vxl spares places online so email them for prices on engines and the like.

The motor trade is dead at the moment and there will always be someone out there willing to do you a better deal....make sure it is someone trusted by you or someone close to you.
