I own a astra vxr and i'm a little confused by the interior quality comments, sure it's not base spec so I can't comment on the interior of those but surely they are similar to mine just with less leather. Anyway IMO the only real shoddy bit of interior is the centre console which is hard plastic, all other parts including the dash, doors, door bins under dash and around the gear stick is a moulded soft plastic (not scratchy) infact similar to the dash of my dads new C class (don't get me wrong I'm not comparing the two, just trying to give and idea of the feel)
My car has now covered 46k and there are no sqeaks or rattles (more than I could say for my 172) the ride is a bit solid but the damping is superb for fast cross country, this is subjective though and again not the same as a base spec car.
UNDERSTEER, yes...it does, in standard form under power the front will push wide pretty easily, this is due to the fact that VX thought it wise to not install a rear anti roll bar. The effect of this is the inhert rear end and power understeer, this is easily remedied by fitting a RARB which completely transforms (a very maxpower/tuner word but it does) the car (as you all know stiffening the rear of a car will reduce understeer and promote a more mobile rear end, the opposite for front end stiffening).
Basicaly yes the Astras are not the greatest car in the world and the only reason I have one was due to it being an very very cheap ex-fleet john lewis car from auction, but they are far from the OMG FAIL CAR this forum seems to think.
P.s MikeHow, as you previously owned a Vxr you must kind of see where I'm coming from, obviously the ST is a better car with a great motor but there ARE more hard plastics in the focus (lower door cards and lower dash etc fake carbon fiber print around the gear leaver). This is not a dig, infact I would quite like a new ST it's just that I feel many people on here are misinformed
