Astra VXR

Where are you getting quotes from?

For the ST and MPS, just online at the moment, the only cars i've had time to ring up for are the VXR and R26. But comparing phone quotes and web quotes, it gives me a rough idea on what i would get quoted on the ST and MPS over the phone.

R26
online 4k
phone 3k

VXR
online 2.8k
phone 1.6k

MPS
online 3.3k
so im guessing around 2.5k on the phone, will check tomorrow.

ST
online 2.2k
guessing around 1300 phone?

Not really sure why your phone quotes are so much lower than your internet quotes, it all seems a bit odd.

Pop along to elephant.co.uk and whack your details in there. Add both your parents as named drivers.

I reckon you'll see a different story insurance wise.

To be honest the insurance cost on all those cars is a bit ridiculous, not sure I'd be prepared to pay £1500+ for insurance aged 24. You kinda have to when you are 17 but at 24? Seems like a waste of money. Mine was under a grand at 24 despite a Group 17 car *and* a fault claim.

The problem with the Civic is the way the engine works. It's a VTEC engine which makes it's power by revving very highly. This means to get the performance you need to absolutely cane it to death - something which you are probably loathe to do on a test drive. If you dont do this, it's slow and underwhelming.

But I agree with you and I dislike the Civic for exactly the same reason. It's power delivery annoys me.

I opened it up fully once on the test drive, and even then it didn't really get me smiling. I'll be honest though, it wasn't a long test, the guy obviously thought (and was right :p ) i couldn't afford a 24k car and i was only out in it for about 8-10 minutes if that.

Due to my stupidity i have quite a few points, and my insurance quotes reflect this. Will check elephant tomorrow, bed now though :)

In my experience they are unbeatable at times. I got a quote on a 2007 Lamborghini Mercialago LP670 the other day for less than you got quoted for an Astra, and I'm only 2 years older than you :p

We need to find you a hobby away from your computer, how bored were you to be quoting yourself for an LP670? :p

I tried a quote for a Focus ST yesterday to see what difference my NCB makes actually. :p

And the answer is £1500 worth of difference, reducing the quote by 60% compared to this point a year ago.

I think the OP needs to realise Vauxhall are not liked in the OCUK motors forum. This dislike shows it's face in every thread that mentions their name.
I personally have had good experiences with Vauxhall. Whilst my experience with Ford (apart from the escort) has always been bad. The Fiesta, Ka, Mondeo and Focus have all been horrible to drive in my opinion. I will never go back to Ford & neither will my parents after their experiences.

I personally like the Astra VXR (apart from the look of 1 single exhaust in the middle). I do however prefer larger cars so went with the Insignia VXR :)
I'd encourage you to get the car you want & have set your mind on getting. If you dont you'll always wish you had!

It's not a case of not being liked, it's a case of the Astra VXR being far from the best hot hatch in it's class. There are many motoring journals and reviewers who agree with this if you don't want to take the forum's word for it.

Still, some like the looks, and the way it drives. That's fine - we're all different. But what the posters in this thread are trying to do is get the OP to try the competition before settling on a car. There's nothing wrong with that and it's good, honest advice. After all, more knowledge can only be a good thing, right?

The only thread trashers are the ones who come in here reeking of butthurt to proclaim that we're only saying this because of some hatred for Vauxhall. Yes, they don't come well recommended around these parts, but at least try the options before making your decision on what must be a multi-thousand pound car.

Hell, I spent ages looking at cars last year and I still feel I made the wrong decision, albeit not a bad one.

Maybe people need to ask why? The whingers never seem to do that. Why is Vauxhall hated? They like to pretend its simply badge, but its not, otherwise Ford, Renault, Citroen etc would be hated as well, and they are not..

This lends itself to two questions - firstly what was so horrible to drive about them that didnt also apply to the equivilent Vauxhall and more importantly, if they were so horrible how come your family owned so many of them?

went with the Insignia VXR :)

Ah, its you...

Did you ever find out of it was one of the ex VXR day track cars? :p

Given the Focus Mk1 and Mondeo Mk3 were generally considered by the motoring press to be leaps ahead of the competition in handling/drivability and the new models are receiving similar acclaim....

An opinion can never be wrong, but if you found 4 different cars "horrible" to drive when the general consensus is just the opposite and the only thing they share is a badge, the best explanation is that you've gone into it with a prejudice because you don't like that badge. Which is exactly what you're trying to argue against, right?
