Astra VXR

The O/P would be much better looking at this forum it contains 16,732 vauxhall lovers and will be much better suited to answer his questions on the VXR..

Vxr forum:
'should I buy a vxr?'
'of course, they are great'

Ocuk:
'should I buy a vxr?'
'if you've driven one, considered the competition and still want one then yes'

I know which scenario is better for the OP

O/P,s question in first post...

"a bit of advice for anything in particular to look out for problem wise when i view one on wednesday?"

Best place for such information, A forum full of VXR owners who would know about any issues he should look for or A computer forum where every post in motors turns into an argument about nothing related to the original post....

Buy a DC2 then you can be my friend.

It's cooler, faster (around the twisties), cheaper and have some more cooler!

A computer forum where every post in motors turns into an argument about nothing related to the original post....

On which planet is an argument about a vxr 'nothing related' to a thread about a vxr?

Why is it that the argument generated by the get offended on behalf of everyone else squad always lasts longer than the original argument? Can't you see the irony?

The thread was getting back on track until yet more people popped in for a cry.

lol fox mate what are you on most of this thread is you telling the O/P the VXR is crap and there is better available. I think you have de-railed the thread more than anyone here...
Look at the original post and then your replies even after the O/P states its a VXR he wants.
So its ok for you to slate the VXR but when anyone tries to defend it in some way they are wrong and trolling ? The Original post was about the chap getting advice on what to look out for when he goes to see a VXR on wednesday where have you even remotely gave anything constructive to that.. ?
Whats the point of having a thread if every thread is derailed and turns into the usual i,m right your wrong thread..

Saying the vxr is poor is not 'nothing related' to a vxr.

Crying about derailment, however, might be.

Stop breaking the irony meter by moaning constantly about others and what they post

This thread would have fizzled out yesterday had it not been for the crying from people like you :p

Well if he already knows he wants a VXR best he skipped this thread and just posted the pictures once he got it.

ok:)

I think the OP needs to realise Vauxhall are not liked in the OCUK motors forum. This dislike shows it's face in every thread that mentions their name.
I personally have had good experiences with Vauxhall. Whilst my experience with Ford (apart from the escort) has always been bad. The Fiesta, Ka, Mondeo and Focus have all been horrible to drive in my opinion. I will never go back to Ford & neither will my parents after their experiences.

I personally like the Astra VXR (apart from the look of 1 single exhaust in the middle). I do however prefer larger cars so went with the Insignia VXR :)
I'd encourage you to get the car you want & have set your mind on getting. If you dont you'll always wish you had!

funny that because as an ex vauxhall owner i'd never go back to vauxhall either.

So whose right and whose wrong then ?

fox haters gonna hate

Always amusing when people blindly attack fox and conveniently ignore everyone else posting and sharing similar opinions.

OP if you really want a VXR then just buy one don't be dismayed if people offer you alternatives, it's not the worst car in the world and you will probably enjoy it but you do really have a duty to yourself to at least try the alternatives. Otherwise you will always wonder if you truely made the right decision based on looks alone rather than real world experience.

Bah you know you arrived when everyone hates you :D

I hate fox, with a passion, he has never helped me with anything and always trolls my posts, he is a vermin

OT does anyone else find it hard to actually get grumpy or troll-like with the xmas smileys? I start off with fire and brimstone anger and by the time I've use two smileys I just want to play robot unicorn attack and stroke a cat....

:D

"always I want to be with you......."
"purr purr"

Been in a similar position to the OP when I originally decided to look for a Hot Hatch. I went around and test drove a couple of cars and fell in love with the ST, so bought one.

having driven the vXR, the ST and the GTi (not driven the Mazda), I can say comfortably that to me, the worst car out of the bunch was the vXR. It felt uncomprimised, the lack of feel and unpredictability ruined for me, what was a really quick car on the straights. The best car was the golf, which is a perfect all rounder. The special edition I've been in recently and is even better; Interior is pretty much perfect. I ended up buying the ST... It's just the feeling I got from the ST which made me buy one. Although it wasn't as quick in the straights as the vXR, or as much of an all rounder as the golf, it just gave me that feeling.

Good luck with the test drive OP, make sure you give it a really good test drive, don't just take it out for 10 minutes like the Type-R. Try for at least half an hour, if you show a proper interest and look smart, you might not even get a salesman along with you. Then you can open it up and get to know the car a little better. You might find that it's the car for you and exactly what you want, but please go into it with an open mind on every car. If you go in thinking the ST or the MPS will be crap, it's likely they will be crap.

Question for the OP though, why a hot hatch? Why not a decent second hand saloon? What are you after in a car? I can't work it out your requirements as to what you want. The hatchback to me looks as though you're after something chuckable, which the vXR isn't. You're not after the vXR for it's superior comfort, as it isn't, and you're not after a hatchback because it's fast in a straight line when there are plenty of faster cars in a straight line on the same budget (all beit older). What exactly are you after in a car? :)

Well, a very interesting day with lots of surprises. I can't wait for the "i told you" so's :p

Test drove the VXR first this morning. Loved the outside, liked the inside, although the visibility wasn't very good. Driving it, this is where my praise stops. Don't get me wrong, powerful car, but it puts it down so badly. The torque steer was barely there in straight lines, but powering out of corners the thing was silly. It felt twitchy with minimal feedback, and tbh apart from the "whooo power", wasn't that fun to drive. Low speed driving wasn't any better either, seemed jerky at low speeds when changing gear, and accelerating softly without boosting away was hard, but i guess something that you would learn to control.

Next up was the ST-2. Outside was ok, it was in my favourite colour, black. Inside, meh. :( Once i got driving though...damn. Power delivery was 100 times better than the astra, driving at normal speeds is a joy, and when you do floor it you feel so much more in control. Car feels planted and solid, feedback is good, and that engine note......mmmmmmm! I would also say, oddly, that the st felt quicker than the vxr too. It was fairly damp this morning, and while the VXR was wheel spinning everywhere the ST just seemed to cope with it all? So yes, left ford feeling surprised and with a smile on my face.

Next up was suppose to be a R26 225, but with it being out of budget, insurance too high, and knowing i would absolutely love it, decided to skip it and go and view a local F1 197 instead. With out a doubt the best looking car inside and out out of the 3. The dash and steering wheel on the 197 were lovely and the recaro seats were pure sex. I got into the 197 and felt completely at ease after 30 seconds of driving it. It felt nimble, great feedback and very responsive. On B roads this was by far the most fun out of the 3 cars i had been in, but once it opened up it was lacking the power (obviously) of the other 2. And because of this, due to the driving im doing at the moment, the ST will be more suitable. The clio is great if your drive to work consists of tight little b roads, but for normal driving the ST seems the best all rounder and most refined.

So yes, my favourite car before is now my least favourite, and my least favourite is now my no.1! Offered a good deal on the ST, just gotta wait for the insurance money to come through :D

Great stuff, glad to see our hounding payed off :)

Just don't post any more details about the deal as they WILL get picked apart and over analysed :p

Just think how great this thread would have been if it wasn't for the 'get offended on behalf of everyone else' squad yet again. The OP took our advice, drove plenty of cars and found out for himself that there are better cars.

The problem with this forum are the people who love to pick fault in the way others put opinion across - not the people putting those opinions across - as this thread has pointed out.

The Focus ST is an excellent car - you've made a great choice :)
