Im currently subscribed to Giganews' unlimited 10 Connections (non SSL) plan, which is shooting up in price at the moment! I've heard some good things about astraweb and they look pretty good in my opinion.

however, im very impatient with downloads, and on 20MB NTL broadband that stays at 20MB all of the time. is there anyone out there that could confirm tha AstraWebs usenet access would be limiting my 20MB connection? or would i most likely see a drop in speed by switching to AstraWeb?

Thanks :D

I'm on 24 meg LLU from UK Online and get 22 megs in throughput 24/7. I was with Giga for years on their top package, and moved to Astra last week for the same reasons you're looking to bail out (£/$).

I get better stability from Astra if anything, they will certainly max your line. I'm pulling CentOS 5.2 from them at 2.2 MB/sec rock solid stable as we speak :D

EDIT: Make sure you sign up using the discounted link HERE. It's a legit special offer for their Unlimited DSL service (the top one), but it's only US$ 11 a month instead of US$ 15 a month :D

Switched to them from Giganews about a month ago and have never looked back, always max my connection no problem.

Fantastic value for money.

I use Astraweb, worked great at Tefals on O2. Shame im on Tiscali who are a shower of ****.

Astraweb's great, I'm on the PAYG plan, just top up with another 110GB every few months. Maxes out my home 10Mb connection, and I get about 40Mb/s downloads on the university wireless, Limited by the wireless speed only there I think :)

Its a fantastic news server and I too made the jump from giganews.

Does anyone know if they offer a referral program?

Been using Astraweb on the pay-as-you-download plan for about 3 years (I think)
Always manage to max out my line on 20 connections with Newsbin Pro.
20Mb means a good 2.2MB/s download speeds for me.

awesome! cheers for the replies everyone,

looks like im definately moving to Astraweb after my Giganews month is up :)

i just signed up to astra and comparing them to my giganews sub i have to say there very similar. The only thing is astra has more damaged file from the 155ish day retention, probly due to the network upgrade. I see how it pans out for a month or two and if it gets better i'll drop my giganews sub

I've just switched from Giganews @ $25 a month to Astraweb @ $11 a month. Same speed - more connections and retention that's getting better.

Bargain.

Glad I saw this thread... I like Giganews cause of the speed I get with them and their retention is great, but I've been thinking about switching because it is a bit expensive really, and I knew there were cheaper alternatives. Think it's about time I switched to Astraweb too.

signed up with giganews just before christmas only to cancel and switch to astraweb a week or so later with their $11 a month deal!

i'm on VM 10meg and have had full speed constantly. very good service thus far

also as has been said, their retention is currently being upgraded to 270 days from 160. I believe its at about 180+ days at the minute and increasing every day :)
