Been looking at various headsets. Mainly for gaming any thoughts on the ones below?

I'm currently borrowing a pair of Astro A40's with Mixamp pro but still cant decide

Hyper X Clouds ll
AKG's 702 with Mod mic £150
Atro A40's £129.99 + Mix amp (grey / orange ones 2015)
Philips X2 Fidelio with Mod mic £194.95

What games do you play and what role do you want the phones to fulfill? i use akg q701 for cs:go, they for me are king of soundstage and positional awareness of your surroundings but be aware that while you can drive them from your soundcard, to drive the akg 7's fully and get the most form them and produce a decent crisp if light bass you will need a amp. the philips fidelio (i owned the x1) are punchy and fun, immersive and easily driven, the astros..... no. no point when listing them with cans of this quality. the hyper x i cannot comment on though they do get good reviews.

Personally i feel the akg + mod mic is about the best you can get for a gaming purpose if competitive fps is your goal, x2 should be good for a rich immersive can.

So I purchased and tried the Astro A40's and the mic does not work, moving it up and down it crackles so returning them today.

Think I am going to get the AGK 702's (£126.95) and mod mic whichever is recommended?

Aslong as you are aware of the sound signature I don't think you would be disappointed, they are a very neutral headphone and can appear very bass light if you do not like that type of sound. I do love mine though.

Well I want to get back into fps games, where hearing footsteps and subtle sounds is good advantage.

I used to love splinter cell chaos theory and the current blacklist. Currently playing squad and going to buy the division.

How would these AKG's fair up in those types of games?

You'd can't do better than the K702 for FPS gaming. They need a decent amp though and you'll likely need a sound card for Dolby Headphone or similar surround headphone effect.

I don't need Dolby effects when using the q's. The soundstage and imiging are so good its pointless.

I thought the whole Dolby 5.1 thing is a gimmick in headphones?

Depends who you ask really. I think the whole multi driver so called 5.1 headset design, such as Roccat Kave, is more of a gimmick. Dolby Headphone can work quite well, but again, it depends on who you ask. Some people wouldn't game without it, while others find it's really not necessary.

I mentioned getting a sound card for Dolby Headphone, because you bought the Astro's, which use Dolby Headphone. I thought you probably went for those because of that reason.

Purchased the Astro A40+mixamp from Argos, cheap @ £129.99 although they are faulty, so took them back.

Think I might get AKG's 702 from what I read everywhere they are a much better sound over general "gaming" headsets.

I'd definitely prefer to buy headphones over a headset. Majority of headsets are really rather poor. The Kingston HyperX Cloud I/II is very good though and would be what I'd go for if I needed something with a microphone attached. The expensive ones from Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Audio Technica, etc, are also very good, but you've got to pay a premium for those. Sennheiser's do have excellent microphones though apparently so may be worth the premium for some.

For positional sound performance though, not much can hold a candle to the K702 and it's variants, save maybe Audio Technica AD700.

The good thing about using Dolby Headphone from a sound card though, is that you can choose to use it or not. Far better than buying a headset for that feature, only to be stuck with a mediocre headset.

If you must have Dolby I remember using razers varient, it is quite good, works with any out put and any can. You can custom tune the positional audio channels also which does make a difference. Well worth looking at.
