Asus 4070 Dual OC is loud

My Asus 4070 Dual OC runs loud and emits a strange vacuum like noise when gaming (the video is with fans at about 60%, temps 70c)

I've used fan software to test the fans 1 by 1 and it seems like the right fan is louder than the left and is the culprit for this high pitched noise. Is it normal for 1 fan to be louder than the other? The fans both seem perfectly stable with no wobble

Here's the video

Would appreciate any advice

Thanks

Yeah that sounds like a fan bearing or something. Had a similar but not as loud noise with a 3080ti.

I just feel like they're going to tell me it's 'within spec' and 'normal'. Really hope that isn't the case but the entire PC will be getting returned if so!

Yeah, they’ll no doubt try something along those lines. One of the things that puts me off going pre built route tbh.

Annoying, I just hope I have some sort of consumer rights to be able to send it all back for a refund if they do play hard ball with it

Thanks for all the input

I know it's definitely Fan2 because if I use FanControl and set Fan1 to 50% it's relatively silent and exactly how I'd expect a fan to sound, but when I set Fan2 to 50% it screams. Definitely not coilwhine because I know exactly how that sounds. Also seems to be intermittent at certain times

I'll keep the thread updated and let you know how I get on with the retailer in question

They replaced the GPU no problem, a brand new card arrived... However it's very similar in terms of noise. I think it's just a loud card to be honest. It's the Evo OC version and from reading around online it is known to be quite a loud card as it doesn't have the best cooler

Playing demanding games and I'm seeing temps of 70c with about 60-70% fan RPM so it does get quite loud, anything below 50% is almost silent, so I may try and mess with undervolting/fan curve :)

The Asus Dual model is actually known for being a pretty quiet card for a twin fan model, that's absolutely abnormal.

Is this the model you have or?

I don't believe so, they do look similar, however mine is the 'EVO OC' which I understand has a worse cooler than the standard 4070 Super OC

ASUS have been a little sneaky with this. The EVO OC is the DUAL`s cheaper, noisier brother. You need to look closely to spot the differences.
Plenty of reviews for the DUAL, less so for the EVO version. I went backwards and forwards when looking for my 4070 Super.

Ended up with the Tri-Fan Zotac :D

That was the puzzling part for me. I was looking at the reviews for the Asus 4070 super dual and the reviews were saying how quiet the card was which gave me even more confirmation that mine was faulty... But it was then that I realized that the Evo OC is a totally different heatsink, it's smaller with less heat pipes and the fans are 10% smaller.

It's a bit scummy for Asus to do this, as you note the cards look pretty much identical in terms of design

Looked into this earlier myself, apparently it's the same HSF they use on the 4060ti, smaller overall with fewer heatpipes.

That's kinda underhanded tbh, I'm pretty sure most people buying the dual model will have seen the positive reviews for the original version. Made worse by the fact many would be buying a card like that for a small form factor HTPC/couch setup and will often value quiet operating hardware.

That's exactly what happened in my case. The company I bought the pre built from advised me it'd be a 'Asus 4070 Super dual' with no mention of it being an EVO OC model. Their response to this today was 'we have sold hundreds and had no issues'. That may be true but it's not the point... Frustrating to be honest

So for a bit of tangent here... (trying to avoid a separate thread for this)

I'm wondering if anyone here has a ASUS DUAL RTX 4070 EVO that could do me a favour?

Could you measure how thick the cooler is from the PCB (not including the PCB) to the top of the cooler? I'm seeing the cooler thickness is approx 50mm but I'm guessing that includes the backplate and stuff.
I'm trying to figure out if it will fit in an ML08 which states it has 43mm clearance for the GPU measured from the PCB to the edge of the cooler (with a further 4.9mm/7.9mm clearence for the backplate)

Also after reading the thread, would people get the EVO version?

I can't imagine how loud the EVO would be in a tiny, cramped case with not much airflow. If I was you I'd look for a different model

I've not been able to find any reviews of the Evo.

I was hoping it was mostly the faulty fan causing your issue, I missed the bit where you said the replacement was also bad.
I guess the one nice thing with my case is that the GPU fans would be up against the vented side of the case so would be sucking in air from outside the case. But because it's so close to the side I really need to know how deep the cooler is.

Also, is yours the 4070 or 4070 Super version?

Mine is the 4070 super

The Ti is not affected by this "issue", as it has the better cooler.
Asus basically thought they could take advantage of how efficient the 4070 Super is by fitting the cooler from a lesser model, and selling it cheaper.
They look so similar, most consumers would not have a clue.

Even the packaging looks almost identical from what I can tell. I wonder why there's so few reviews for the EVO OC model considering GPU-Z tells me it was released in January this year

Just an update

I think the retailer has now understood that the card they said they'd provide versus the one I got are two totally different models. They said that the EVO OC's stock code was essentially 'Asus 4070 Super Dual' so it seems like even they weren't fully clued up about the different models.

Anyway, they said I could wait a month for different models to come in stock and they'd be happy to switch it at that point, which is very good of them, but I was thinking of requesting the AMD equivalent instead but not sure how much of a gamble that'd be... Been a while since I last used an AMD card and I have a Gsync compatible monitor so probably not worth it

I think they're the same size though, so if you could measure the thickness of the cooler from the PCB that be handy.

I should be able to do this for you tomorrow once the card is out of the system.

I've gone for a zotac 4070ti Super trinity. The reviews say the card is cool and quiet so it should be alright. Zotac offer a 5 year warranty as well. I'll return the 4070 super evo back for a refund

Just an update in case someone stumbles up on this thread and they're considering the Zotac 4070ti Super Trinity

Thermals are really good, under full load I don't see the card exceed 70c and this is with fans only around 40%. The fans are almost entirely silent at that level and I've not yet seen them ramp up anymore than 40%

This card does have some pretty bad coil whine. I've owned a fair few cards over the past 10 years and they've all had coil whine, some worse than others. This card is probably near top of the list, it absolutely screams in certain games @ 165fps, but I'm not overly concerned because I do know how much of a lottery coil whine is and I'm certainly not going to be playing the return game with this card, I'll suck it up and deal with it and hope it lessens over time, although I know that's unlikely.

Curious to know if there's any PSU's that are coil while busters, I know people used to think the GPU+PSU combo could be to blame
