So ive just installed my ASUS 5870, so far im impressed, but i have a couple of questions

it comes with a software called smart doctor, looks after temps, volts, fan speed etc, if im not planning on messing with the voltages is it reccomended that i leave this uninstalled. I currently have it installed and i THINK it may be interfering with my ccc profile. Ive set my profile to be at 50% fan, but at startup theres no 50% fan and i have to activate it manually, is this normal or do you think its the asus software getting in the way?

second question if im using the 10.3 preview files as posted below in the forum, am i right in thinking that riva tuner will not detect them thus not being able to give on onscreen display of my temps ?

oh and one other thing, installed the 10.3 right after installation, nothing before just this, is this ok ?

many thanks

i). Dump Smartdoctor and download/install MSI Afterburner instead. This works fine with Asus cards and provides a much better interface for overclocking, fan control and monitoring.
ii). No need to bother with Rivatuner because MSI Afterburner is made by the same author "Unwinder" and "powered by Rivatuner". It is the same thing in a simplified package. Just install the Cat 10.3's, restart, and instal MSI Afterburner afterwards.

Great card choice!

I used to use SmartDoctor with my Asus 9800GT, and it was a good piece of kit. However, since I've had my Asus HD4870 Dark Knight I've just used CCC as it allows me to OC to 850MHz core clock anyway - also had conflict errors when both installed with regard to fan speeds.

Sorry for jacking here, but does MSI Afterburner work with all 4870's? I have a gainward, that I'd like to OC, but don't want to faff with bios flashing and don't like using ATT on Windows 7 due to drivers not being signed.

why do u think my profile isnt starting up at startup ?
Uninstall Smartdoctor and test whether the CCC profile works upon startup. If it still does not work, remove/reinstall the Cat drivers. Also make sure RivaTuner is not installed because it does not officially support 58xx cards.

MSI Afterburner will work with any unlcoked bios (such as used on MSI and ASUS cards). There is apparantly a hack that can be performed so that it works with other cards, but I have not tried it.

As you can see i have 2 of the these mate and you really dont need any profile set up if there are clocked std or even 900/1300. If the card is getting hot over 85c then you should look at case airflow really. The only reason i use MSI afterburner is my top card gets hot in Xfire so i made a custom profile but the ccc used to override on start up...all i did was run msconfig and disable the ccc on start np :)
