Asus 7970 Matrix Plat Issues

Good morning all!

I've been contemplating a new GPU for some time (Replacing a GTX 570), so when Overclockers had the Asus HD7970 Matrix Platinum on offer, it was an easy purcahse despite some concerns I had before hand regarding my PSU (My thought was - may aswell try it with my current PSU before upgrading - All though, it should have been alright)

It arrived today, so I decided to bung it in to my rig - No luck. ::(

Fans spin (GPU and case), side (Matrix logo) light and the two green lights above the pins apear as expected, but no output what so ever (I can only test the two DVI ports). In addition, having it in my rig prevents it from booting (Mouse lights should appear when you get to the Windows sign in page - they dont. The machine doesnt cut out or restart at any point, just sits about and does nothing of use).

This leads me to suspect a PSU issue. Currently I own (600w, 80+ Gold Rated from BeQuiet):

I'm running: Stock i5 2500k, MSI P67 GD53 (B3) (It only has PCI-E 2.0 slots, but I have been told that 3.0 cards work in 2.0 slots with no real problems?) and some Antec case which is way too small with awful cable management but 4 decent enough fans for my purposes).

I've plugged my 570 back in and everything works fine.

Before I splash out on a meatier PSU, it would be nice to see if the above symptoms correlate to a PSU problem.

Many thanks,

Dan

Have you removed all the old driver for your 570 and completed driver sweeper? It is known that drivers can cause output issues.

If you didn't remove the old drivers, put back in your old card first and do it.

Try updating your bios after if that doesn't work but use caution.

Double check on all the connectors, unplug any case fans, optical drives and only keep the hd with OS plugged.

My ram came loose and wasnt booting. Too bad my asus 7970 matrix is faulty (overheating) and have to be rma.

I've been having similar, intermittent issues with mine when paired with Asrock z68 MB. Most of the time it boots, sometimes it doesn't. MB BIOS is up to date, would it be worth updating the 7970 BIOS too?

+1 for updating the bios. Solved my problem as well.

@ Cool_Breeze : what position should the switch be (the one next to the crossfire fingers)? It arrived with it positioned to the left. :)

I have owned 2 7970 matrix plats now at various points and one thing i learnt from the first card is they like there operating surroundings to be perfect otherwise they will not play ball.
1. Update your bios
2. System must be totally clean of vga drivers before installing card
3. Firmware update, although newer cards probably have this already.

Then apart from gpu tweak, you will be able to enjoy a superb card.
