Asus 7970 Matrix upgrade

I've just upgraded from a 2500k to a Asus Sabertooth Z77 & Intel i7 3770K so thought maybe upgrade the GPU also.

I have a Asus 7970 Matrix in there at the moment and planning on gaming @2560x1440

Would adding a 2nd 7970 be better than swapping it out for single R290. Or any other option coming from the Nvidia side.

If sticking with another 7970 in crossfire would any 7970 work as the Matrix one is overclocked than a standard model.

Im not a fan of crossfire or sli, i always buy the best single card solution i can afford, the R290 will be fine at 1440P so would the 780

you could also crossfire it with a R9 280X
