ASUS 970 OC STRIX ?

Well what a time of it I've had.

I bought an MSI 970 Gaming Edition and suffered from the Fan 2 100% spin problem. I returned the card and I've been embroiled in an argument with the vendor for a month now, that's also a whole month without my card.
I won't mention what etailer it was but I'll never venture there again.

Anyway after many frustrating emails and telephone calls they are sending me a cheque to cover the price of the faulty card.

So I'm looking to buy from OCUK this time but not sure which road I want to take.

I'm thinking the ASUS OC Strix ? I like the fact it has a backplate and also the idle fans feature as my PC sits right next to me at eye level so less noise the better.
The thing is I'm thinking I read the ASUS cards suffered from the fan problem but I'm not sure. Did they or do they still ?
I'd go for GB G1 windforce x3 next but hoping the ASUS is good to go.

Any pertinent info welcome, thanks :)

They wouldn't give me one, they were rather difficult to deal with. I hasd to involve third parties to to get to the stage I am at the moment.

Any way, hopefully I get my cheque this week.
ASUS has the same problem, yes, no ?

I ain't heard of the strix having fan issues, its a nice card. G1 would be my choice though. Don't really like this passive fan thing, I'd sooner have lower temps with the fans going that are silent anyway at idle.

I had both G1 and Strix and you can definitely tell the difference in idle.

if you can fit it in your case, though G1 is still probably a better option, due to better power delivery.

Yeah the power delivery seems to be selling point of the GB card.

I could mod it to a custom fan curve for silent idle I suppose.

I have the Strix and it's a very nice card, good looking and sturdy. Didn't notice any fan problems. Clocks to 1512mhz on stock volts, the temps could be lower but I guess my case and cable management are partially to blame. Without OC temps float between 68-71, oc/max power limit can make it hit 75c (rarely). Idles between 36-39c. You can always set a custom fan curve if you're not satisfied with cooling efficiency.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the Gigabyte. It's needlesly long and bulky. As for the power delivery, why would anyone want to push a 970 past 1500mhz other than for bragging rights? I'd rather have a single 8-pin power connector, the card can still reach 1500mhz and the less cables the better.

It sounds like for the OP the right card is the Strix. The one feature you want is the 0Db which the Strix offers. Both cards are fine. The G1 faster out the box and was my card of choice which is why I own one.

But if the OP is overclocking, and if the Strix can OC just as well as the G1, the the right card is the Strix for the OP.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty positive that the Giga has more overclocking potential due to higher TDP limit alone. You just have to ask yourself whether an extra 50-80mhz (with a custom bios probably) is worth the hassle. Anything over 1500mhz is hardly noticeable in day-to-day operation.

Anyways, there's no guarantee you'll get a good clocker because it all boils down to the silicon lottery. I've seen Gigs that can't do what my Strix does at stock volts.

EDIT: I've just noticed you're talking about the Windforce edition, not the G1. Seriously, if you're going to consider Gigabyte, I suggest you go for the G1 instead of the WF.

keasy if you get the G1 you can edit the bios to stop the fans spinning at idle as far as i'm aware.

Because I want as much grunt as possible. If my 4690k can run at 4.7GHz then i'll run it at that.

Likewise if my MSI can game at 1600 core then i'll use it at that

That's why I said the OP has to consider his priorities. If you're certain that those 3-4 frames make your gaming experience significantly better then whatever floats your boat, I guess. Personally, I think it's a case of diminished return but I won't impose my opinions on anyone as it's none of my business what other people do with their cards. He wanted an opinion, I gave him one. Simple as. That said, if he's among those who are fussed about pushing a card to within an inch of its life to squeeze a couple of fps more then he might as well go for a 980 instead and clock it even further.

EDIT: Or go SLI, for that matter.

Think it probably will be the ASUS card as the silence is more important to me than a few frames more.

The Galax is a consideration too mind you as it switches one fan off under 60c.
