Asus 980 Ti not working in PCI-E lane 1

Hello there,

I have been experiencing an issue when placing my 980 Ti in the PCIEX16_1 lane (specs in my signature).

Up to this point I have been using the graphics card in the PCI-EX16_3 slot where it runs at 8x (not a problem) but since moving from my HAF-X to the 400Q it made sense to place the graphics card in the suggested VGA slot due to the tighter space.

The computer POSTs fine when the 980 Ti is in PCI-EX16 lane 2 or 3 but produces errors during post when the graphics card is in lane 1. The VGA_LED lights up and stays red, then there is a Beep Code error of 1 Long and 3 short beeps (Video (EGA) Display Circuitry error). Also, there is a Error code on the Q-code display of d6 which is "no console device found" error. Oddly even though there are these errors the computer still boots into windows (but with no display output)

I came to the conclusion that Lane 1 was broken so it would be an RMA but I decided to check the lane with an Old Ati 4870. The 4870 worked in all the PCI-EX16 lanes which threw a spanner in the works.

The 980 seems to be getting enough power as the 2 LED indicators show white when the two 8-pin connectors are plugged in. The system is also stable and does not fail during a stress test or gaming.

So it appears that all the PCI lanes are healthy and that the GTX 980 Ti is healthy it's just doesn't work in lane 1. I have reseated the card about 10 times in Lane 1 to no avail.

Any ideas as what could be the problem? Is there a setting in the BIOS that should be changed when using a newer graphics card (than the 4870...)? My Bios revision is: 2001

Thank you for your help.

mate what mobo do you have? basically i had kind of the same issue with a rampage extreme v, PCIE lane 1 would not work with anything, after some research it turns out that it would not work as my 5820k was limited to how many lanes you have hence pcie 1 was dead, ive upgraded to the 5930k now and now the lane fully works, but your saying that you tried a 4870? i would check the mobo manual and see if all your slots are activated with a 5820k

Thanks for your reply, that's an interesting point you make.

I have the Asus X99-A/USB 3.1.

I had a quick look in the manual and on page 1-16 it says for a 28-Lane CPU the correct VGA configuration for a single card is the card in PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16_1 (Lane 1) running at 16x.

That's what they say in the manual but the issue could be related to what you're talking about. What really confuses me is that the 4870 works in all the lanes and the 980 Ti is the same apart from that lane 1.

My only guess is it could be something to do with the PCIe 3.0/2.0 standards where the lane works when a PCIE 2.0 card is in it but fails when a 3.0 is in it. :/
