There is a £10 price difference the AC68U is cheaper. I want to pick one up on the way home from work today, as my Asus RT56U is rubbish for wireless signal.

Which one to go for? From reviews there is not much in it. I was leaning towards the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 as some reviews say the range is better.

If you're mostly after wireless coverage, you might be better off buying a couple of access points depending on how large the area is you're trying to cover. Is it both 2.4GHz and 5GHz that's having issues?

Yes it's both bands having issues. I get poor signal and throughput on both, I already have a range extender which I would seek to get rid of if I upgraded router. Speeds are quite limited on the range extender however (struggle to stream Netflix HD).

The router seems to need rebooting quite a bit and I can never pick up the 5GHz band!

BTW I have a VM 100mb cable connection.

Range extenders can only do so much as it still needs to rely on the original wireless network.

I have both the RT-N56U (for my sister) and the RT-AC68U (for myself) and while the 68U's coverage is better (especially the 2.4GHz range), I don't really feel it's worth upgrading the router for that.

Have you considered running a long cable down to the area that needs better coverage, and then using something like a UniFi AC AP? These do very well coverage and speed wise and it will be cheaper than buying a new router.
